does anyone actually use magnesium fire starter or even larp as a cave man to make a camp fire ?
personally because I'm a smoker, I always carry a lighter and never bothered to use any of those thing

Have before, but I've started bringing matches and a lighter. It's good if you really like the "buy once use forever" concept, but it's not exactly convenient. If everything else fails for any reason, it's a good fallback.

Magnesium fire starters are easy as fuck to use but not something you’d use outside of an emergency. You grind the magnesium bar into a powder with a saw that is usually provided. You only need about a quarter sized pile of powder far from the whole bar of magnesium. Then strike a Ferro rod (also usually provided on the backside of the bar) unto the powder and it will flare up. It burns quick so you need to have tinder around it and it burns brightly with a lot of UV so best to look away as your striking or you will see spots for hours

No. But there isn't any harm in using magnesium starters. I personally use stormproof matches because I'm a bitch and don't like getting my hands close to what I'm burning

I use it almost every time I start a fire, it's just fun. I cheat and use char cloth tho. Want to get better at friction fire, I used to have it down pretty well but fell out of practice and discovered recently I can't do it anymore.

i bought one after failing to use a bic lighter, storm lighter (it decided to fall apart) and safety matches in wind and rain. nothing dumb about bringing a small tin of tinder materials as well
so now i carry a bic lighter, safety matches and a ferro rod w/ striker
