I’m not even sure how much of a difference it makes. Memecaster spools are smaller, so the line is layered on thicker, I think that’s the main reason the line digs in like that. I have run braid on every baitcaster I own, but I never had that problem with braid on spinning reels, so I’m not sure if mono or flouro would do the same thing. Probably depeneds what weight of line you run as well, a baitcaster spool with 300yds of 6lb mono will likely dig into itself if you yank on a snag easier than 100yds of 20lb mono.

Anyway if you think you will nest it up, mono is cheaper to chop off than braid, although after learning to use the baitcasters, I only had one nest that was bad enough to chop some line off, the rest of them got straightened out with some patience.

False, you vary the lure based on water conditions. For salmonids you want to entice them to strike without spooking them. So in warm water that is clear you want a smaller, more subdued lure. A large lure in UV colors is more likely to spook them under the same conditions. When the water is cold and a bit murky, you'll need a bigger lure to entice them to attack. Fish metabolism decreases with water temp, so fish are less active in colder water. Therefore it takes more stimulation to make them strike.

Every time I interact with a 100, 000$ bass boat fag, I laugh. The two places I fish most often are high alpine streams and lakes anywhere from 10k to 13k elevation (clear and cold) or the pond on my parents estate in the midwest, often during the summer (warm and murky)

You dont really anything other than food, water, shelter and a job to live. When you get invested into a hobby you spend more money. I started with a hand me down rod and flies. Then I bought a new 5wt. Then an 8wt for pike/bass. Then a vice, tying tools and materials. Then an 11wt for musky. Fly fishing catch list: brook trout, rainbow, smallmouth, largemouth, pike, musky, lake trout, rock bass, sunfish, river redhorse and walleye. All native to my area. It's a difference in hobby priorities, Fly fishing is my main hobby and would never pass it up to do any other leisure activity. Even if its stocked fish or invasives, I will try to catch it on a fly rod.

Some people in western Canada fish for catfish with 6-8wt fly rods but I'm not sure how viable that would be in Mississippi. If you only want to dink fish you could get a 2 or 3wt. You can get into it pretty cheaply but if you envision yourself doing it for a while buy once cry once.

I’ve caught 1000+ fish between my tenkara and keiryu rods but I prefer my $1200 T & T handmade fly rod because:
A) It casts like a dream, no tenkara rod can compare (and I’ve tried most of the premium JDM rods) and
B) There’s a point where 5x tippet isn’t going to cut it no matter how well you play the fish if you can’t let the line unspool. Just the other day a 28” rainbow ran out 100ft of line while I I was trying to bring him in. I’ve caught 20” trout on the tenkara a few times but if they make a hard break they’re coming off, the rods aren’t meant to catch fish that big and heavy.
Tenkara is fun in the right situation but it’s not the ultimate in fishing by any means.

Clear water: natural colors, light colors, bright colors are better but anything can work.

Muddy/Stained water: dark colors (black, purple, blue), flash, noise/water pressure (chatterbaits, spinners) are the best. Its not impossible to catch fish on light colored and noiseless lures but they are not visible from very far.

Spring: smaller profile lures relative to what you would use during summer and fall. I prefer to work gliders slowly. If you're fishing spawn beds during spawn (like a nigger) use something bigger.

Summer: anything goes but faster retrieves and topwater work the best imo. The fish's metabolism is at its highest so they will chase lures down.

Fall: big and slow lures are the most productive, the fish's metabolism is slowing down so they dont chase small forage (relative to their size). They prefer to eat much larger prey this allows them to get as fat as possible which helps with egg production through winter.

Imo the Loomis rods aren't as nice looking as the other 1000$ rods, even the Asquith. I'll look into the customer service thing that's a pretty big turn off when buying expensive rods. I'm open to recommendations, I'll be targeting pike, musky and lake trout. Striped bass redfish, small tarpon and dolphin fish are possibilities depending if I start working or continue school.

The most recommended high price rods for big game are the nrx, the radian which you might be able to find on close out or the Asquith. Scott just released the centric which is their replacement for the radian. For that kind of money I would definitely make a short list of rods then find somewhere to at least cast them.

I have to drive a 6-8 hour round trip to cast rods sadly. My casting list is Exocett, X, Meridian/Radian, NRX+, Asquith. My regular shop only carries 2/5 and another shop further away carries the rest. The fishing is crazy good here but its hours away from the shops. The only time I'm near the shops is skiing hopefully I can test cast in the winter.

very good places where you can talk to experienced south coast fishermen is WORLDSEAFISHING forums and go to south coast catch reports and have a read around, also facebook is a strangely rich community for british sea fishing

from what I do know, small flatfish like dab / flounder / plaice are easy and delicious, that's what I'd target if I took up beach fishing as a beginner. Bream, Sea bass and skate are possible too and they fight hard taste good and are highly prized. I don't think we get much pollock though

bait, I think you'd have to buy them from a fishing shop (lugworm i think they all use)

tackle is all very cheap and cheerful, there is not much point spending money and lots of tackle is lost in snags

if you don't have a fly rod, pistol pete's with a casting bubble have been much more effective than any of spinners/trout magnets/spoons/rapala in my experience. Obviously this doesn't necessarily apply if you're targeting trout that hang out in the deeper water like mackinaw. I've had the best luck with olive/brown/black during the day and mafia/ugly in the morning/evening

i'm sure it's similar in states other than colorado, but I have a lot of success on copper johns and elkhair caddis any season except winter. wooly buggers also do well, but you could obviously use a pistol pete there since all except the platte river pete is either a beaded wooly bugger or a beaded wooly worm with a propeller tip.

Ya I hear you on finding a place to cast rods my closest decent fly shop is 2 hours away. I think you’ll have a good time shopping for them and you can’t really go wrong no matter what you pick. To me the rods I’d be interested in casting are a Scott radian and centric, the nrx, Asquith, Sage X, Orvis h3 tip flex (I think they call it d now or something dumb) and the Exocets. My pike rod/striper rod is an 8 wt recon I’d love to drop some serious dough but I’m too jew to spend it.

I cast the H3D and its nice past 50ft and a little stiff below that range, but its also the ugliest high end fly rod with middle of the pack performance. The only reason I'm willing to drop some serious money is because if I move away for work/school then I will not have access to fly shops for a good while, so reliability will be the most important thing. Trying to find a used Tibor for that reason, literally nothing can go wrong with minimal maintenance.

I agree Orvis made some big mistakes with their latest rod generation. The white labels are ugly they just did that so when you see a picture of someone fishing their rods it’s obvious what brand it is from a distance. They also straight up made the recon a worse and uglier rod. It’s heavier with worse hardware. I like my last generation recon but it’s a little slower than I prefer for a big stick. I’m from the east coast so Orvis has big following here kind of sad to see them become the Harley Davidson of the fly fishing world. A Tibor would be a good pick up if you can find a decent one used I always am poking around for used equipment and everything I’ve seen is overpriced if you can even find what you’re looking for.

There may not be a specific lure that will guarantee more fish and you're right there are way too many variables to test lures accurately. But checking all the boxes for color, action and size will drastically increase your odds, these are easily determined by time of year, fish species, ecology and water conditions. Each of these things are well documented or easily observable while on the water. There's no science to selecting lures but you can apply science from other fields while selecting lures to increase your odds.

fish are not smart. they are driven by instinct. A lot of species will abruptly change behavior based on hard coded water temperature for instance. Especially in the spring and fall water temperature does not correlate with ambient air temperature, there is no way in accurately predicting without hard data. That being said, I don't keep a log myself. But it would have saved me a lot of time from showing up to a fishery that has completely shut down or I showed up weeks late to.

It's not as critical for freshwater but for saltwater it's 100% necessary unless you are sourcing from fishing news and reports.

I highly doubt any fish in the Centrarchidae are sensitive to jig or weight size. As long as it fits in their mouths you are good to go. If crappie are swimming deep you need to put on as much weight as you need to get down there.

Fluoro coated nylon is fine. I've caught wild brooks and browns on flouro coated nylon. Line choice doesn't make a huge difference for flashy lures since you are triggering the fish's defensive response rather than their feeding response. Trout are much more cautious when feeding.
