The entire point in flies is to look like the bugs flying about by the water that the fish are currently eating. They will hopefully go for it if you're skilled/lucky enough to make the fly appear like a bug so it's pretty much a toss up.

If you're fishing for fun, fly fishing makes for a good day. If you're fishing for food, probably not.

Yes. First imagine what it looks like wet and not a dry clump of feathers. Strip it through the water, it looks like a little darting fish. It draws a reaction strike just like a swim jig or crankbait would.

Actually this. The more a lure looks like a staple food source for a fish the more likely it is to hit on it. Doubt it'd do very well in most salt water fishing holes but would probably get some hits on a fly rod.
