How are people successful constantly fishing non-weedless lures in freshwater? So many places I fish are just naturally snaggy or have bottoms filled with gunk and weed. I do a lot of float fishing and still occasionally get snagged. Are people just content with losing $20-$30 worth of lures every time they go out ?

Any of the smaller fiskar scissors. Cheap, hold an edge and they cut very well. Actual tying scissors are only worth it for detail work but I prefer a razor blade for that kind of stuff.

What is the size of the grips like on the fiskars? I hold my scissors while I tie so if they are too big it’s uncomfortable. I was looking at dr slick but I think I prefer plastic to metal finger rings.

Fuck it, gonna bite the bullet and get my fishing license. I'm in southeast PA, I know it's late but there's still some trout stocked rivers within a 45 minute drive from me. No idea if they've been stocked lately, but even if I just catch some dinky little panfish I'd be fine with it, as long as I get back out there.
I grabbed myself a cheap-ass real from the local Dick's (Daiwa Strikeforce, I'm expecting it to break soon). Once I loaded it up with some 6lb flouro, I found an old fishing rod from when I was younger. It's probably higher quality compared to this cheap reel, but I gotta clean it up and grease it before I can use it.
Also, it's a bit heavier than my current cheap setup, and for what I'm expecting to catch I want as light of an action as I can.

Anybody set up their bicycle for fishing ? There is a trail near me that is miles between parking lots / access points that I want to use to quickly do spot hopping. The only thing I really need is good rod holders, debating if I should buy something premade or DIY it out of PVC and clamps.

Yeah I have a fishing bike. Built a custom wood basket on the back to hold a small-ish cooler and added some vertical sections of ABS pipe to hold a couple rods. It works really well. I carry lure boxes in a backpack with other gear but I might add a front basket to carry that stuff.

Two common patterns I have seen are put your rod in tube or bag and use a bike trailer. Breaking down rod and reel not helpful to me because I am trying to do hit and run spot hopping and a bike trailer is not viable due to the terrain.

You never put a gun rack on your bike as a kid? If you can easily disassemble go the DIY route and make a Y fork above the handlebars, then lash in place. Alternatively, you could lash to the frame itself (weight of rod tied to crotch bar, rest sticking off back)

Star drags cast way better than lever drags. An Avet with mc will cast better than a regular lever drag, but it's just inherent in the design that a good star drag will cast further. Look on the bow of a sport boat, the guys slinging surface irons are all using star drags, the spool is just way lighter.

Depends, braid to fluoro on my spinners and low profile baitcasters. Braid to 100yd topshot of 40lb mono for my jigstick. Braid to 30yard mono topshot to 6 feet of fluoro for flylining live bait.

thats what im asking, what size baits do i put in what softplastics? i am not American so this stuff is pretty new here
i want to use "shad" type swimbaits, stuff i would traditionally just use a jighead for, but lately ive been fishing places that require a more weedless solution and i am not woried about hookup ration because if the pike i ussually fish for get it in their mouths its gonna stick even if it has to compress the bait

Pathfinder 17T. Tunnel hull. Runs in literal spit; like 4 inches. Poles in about 7 or 8 inches. Same manufacturer as the Maverick HPX-T and nearly the same hull but not finished out as nicely. Overall, it’s a pretty good poling skiff. Has a little hull slap and isn’t as sexy as a hells bay but it gets the job done.

I have a larger spinner that I'll load up with something else for something a bit bigger, and I have a fly rod in storage. The fly rod can probably be up and running with the same fly line, but I think I need to wash the fly line and wash/lube the reel up. Ditto on washing/lubing the larger spinner reel, but that shouldn't be too difficult.

Mitzi makes a good skiff that’s a little better in the rough stuff and they tend to sell for similar prices these days. A Hewes rides like a cloud, but they aren’t going to get quite as skinny and they’re more work to pole due to the higher weight. Great boats though.

here is something fair weather fags don't understand about most north american game fish. They see them as warm water fish and truth is thats bullshit maybe bass can be called that but summerfags will never catch the monster sized fish and thats because in the cold weather months the females are carrying those eggs and need to keep up a layer of fat to get those eggs to the spawn. Not only that in almost all fish species the females are much larger then the males so those nigs who say they went out in july and caught 20 bass or something in a couple of hours or 2-3 musky are not catching the biggest fish. Also during the colder months Esox change their patterns to an almost reverse of summer and late spring they will go out to steep contour line drops near weedy shallow areas(i dont fish deep enough water to have a thermocline) this is because during the low light hours they will actively be feeding to build that fat up but noon to mid day they will move in more shallow to catch more heat to get some energy to do more feeding.

Yeah I'm by no means a fair weather fisherman, and summer is my least favorite time of year, and I understand that fall is prime time for esox, but turnover usually pushes the big fish deep again, which is one of the big reasons I have a hard time catching big fish in the summer, is because they're all suspended in 30 or 40 fow and trawling open lake with planar boards isn't my idea of a fun time, even if it means big fish. The best part about fall when the temps are in the 60s is that the big fish push up shallow, which means I can toss bucktails or big rubber or jerkbaits and have chunky skis follow it to the boat, which is exciting and is the whole reason why I musky fish, but once turnover comes the musky go deep. Yeah maybe they're easier to find than in the summer because they're off steep break lines and stuff, but the fishing here primarly consists of big rubber baits jigged slow off points. Less fun than the same fish chasing baits in 5 feet of water imo. Belive me all winter ill be out in single digits fishing steelhead every chance I get, but fishing for me isn't always about the size of the fish. If i cared more about the size of the fish instead of aggressive boatside takes, I'd be at the pond 10 minutes from my house with a can of corn catching 50 pound grass carp instead of driving around like a madman.

I'm in Vilas County WI so most lakes are not deep enough to support those deep thermocline patterns so I can get away with twitching glide and suspending jerk baits my sucker rigs also still work great in those times. Plus I can throw blue gill i catch off the pier out overnight and catch more pike then I do in summer because of the fucking bullheads.

Anytime I’m not using a lure. They set themselves which is really handy especially when you have to deal with the sort of bait stealers you get with inshore saltwater. And when I hit reefs offshore I have to use them anyway so it’s no hardship.

First day back in a stream in about a decade. Didn't seem like anything was biting and I didn't see any other fishermen out there, which can't be a great sign. Felt like I might have had one hit at my first spot, but I wasn't quick enough in setting the hook.

Not going to say its impossible but its not a good idea. If you hook even a 5lb laker the fight will be miserable. I currently use an 8wt for lakers and will be upgrading to a 10wt for bigger lakers/pike/light musky. Sinking lines and big flies are the norm in lake trout fishing. The main forage for lakers in my waters is lake whitefish, so I mainly use white flies in various sizes depending on the time of year.

I've got about $500 into spinning gear and it costs $42 for a yearly license that does not include salmon and steelhead. I probably brought home 40-50 lbs of trout meat during this calendar year most of which I smoked and ate already. I might invest in a vacuum sealer so I can freeze finished product for convenience, but even without a sealer I can keep the fresh trout for a few months. Smoked trout goes for about $20/lb in a market, so if I end up with 25 lbs finished product that's $500 worth of snacs minus the cost of brown sugar, salt, wood chips, and propane. Of course, you also have to factor in the time. Fishing is recreation for me, so I don't account for time spent but time is generally valuable. If you aren't fishing recreationally and assess time at the market value for your labor, that will change the equation quite a bit. If you're a NEET and your time is objectively value-less then catching your own fish nuggies is a great economic investment. You would earn zero nuggies otherwise.

Why is it so impossible to catch salmon? I've spent the last couple years trying to catch them on lures and never got a single bite, so today I decided to try using spawn sacs.
