Both parties are terrible and the federal agencies are bloated and ineffective, including the EPA and every other agency. Also all the jobs are given to veterans and minorities and they are unfireable. I have to deal with the IRS regularly and they are criminally unhelpful. There is a 30% chance they will hang up on you if you ask them to do anything. This was before Covid, now they turned all the phone lines off and do everything by mail. Supposedly there are tractor trailers full of over 5 million letters sitting unopened, and they keep sending more penalty notices with no way to answer them. The feds are a joke and any serious discussion about them should acknowledge that failure is the service they are going to provide.

Once the leaves are down it'll be better but there's always tourists up here. I brought some friends up to cascade last weekend and there were hundreds of fuckers on the trail (pic rel). Usually weekdays are quieter than weekends if you just want to get out for a day trip or short backpack.

State land without hikers doesn't exist in the Hudson valley because of our proximity to the city and the suburbs all around. If you're willing to go off trail you can get some isolation, just make sure you can read a map and go on a weekday. None of the parks allow guns except a few during hunting seasons but the larger parks like Harriman or Fahnestock are big enough that you can find spots to shoot where the sound of the gunshots wont reach anybody. I've been doing that for a couple years with my 10/22 and haven't gotten in any trouble, just be sure to use common sense and clean up your trash. A rifle or handgun will echo much farther. Side note, if you like checking out abandoned structures you should definitely visit angle fly preserve. Its got a bunch of abandoned houses its pretty neat.

Just moved to Utuca. Already checked out the abandoned mall that burned down, snuck into the graveyard at night to check it out, and have been up to Forestport to do some hiking around there (Bald mountain and Chub Pond so far). Not too surprising. I like taking the powerlines trail down to the lean to and then hiking up the FLT toward the dam. That, or doing big bend taking the trillium trail down towards dishmill creek and back up to the car.

Last time I was at Letchworth I did those trails around Big Bend. 10 was more of a road than a proper hiking trail and had cars driving down it. A few of the trails leading from 10 were nice though. I especially liked the one going down to the Genesee River that doesn't appear to be marked on that map.

Yeah, big bend is more of a road than a proper trail. I like to eat a tab of L or munch on some boomers and hike the big bend. Right around the time they really start kicking in is when you get back to the 10A turnoff and you can plunge into the woods

Remember, the Adirondack Park was created by Democrats after the entire 1891 Democratic ticket was elected to statewide offices. They were also instrumental in banning fracking, protecting surface waters in the Southern Tier for fisherman and outdoor enthusiasts.
