First time backpacking advice

No.1896514 View ViewReplyOriginalReport
I have a decent amount of experience camping with family. Know how to start fires, purify water, properly pitch a tent etc. Spent a little time doing 1 night backpacking trips near my home, normally no more than 5-10 miles total in relatively simple terrain just to get a feel for it.

Been thinking about planning a larger trip, eyeing up the PCT since in CA and I love the sierras. I'm relatively fit, used to work out before corona but I am a little worried about distance. Was thinking about driving up to Ebbetts pass and doing a couple out-and-backs down the trail to get a feel for it.

Equipment wise, I have a decent lightweight camp stove, a cheap but functional backpack, first aid supplies, knives, flashlights, all the regular camping shit. I have a pretty sizeable sub-32 sleeping bag, which is always the heaviest thing I carry. I think it was designed for car camping. I'll also need to purchase a tent.

Any advice/experience would be appreciated. Don't want to fuck off into the mountains and die.

pic related, the mountains even look beautiful on google earth
