Just keep it tame dude, don't represent yourself as some kind of bushcraft god, bring some food, a fire starter, learn to take a shit in the woods. You can grab a solid tent for under 100$ new, spend most of your money on a sleeping bag. Make sure to buy, find, or make a ground pad because otherwise you'll be very cold. You can be as cheap as you want with everything else, you'll just be out for a night or two so gear doesn't matter too much.

You really don't need much to go /out/. Download some Gps apps on your phone. Get a water filter and a water bladder. Hatchet. A good fixed blade knife. Folding saw. Calorie dense food in bags. Avoid metal cans if you're hiking a lot to the spot. Look up what tents people that are camping in your climate use and buy one. Always have 3 means of making fire. Lighter/matches/magnesium or flint. Don't skimp on a good sleeping bag ever. Try and only take one pot to cook in. Always have a first aid kit in your bag. Always use your gear prior to camping out. Set up a mock camping scenario in your backyard and test your gear. Always have a compass.

You will be fine just taking what I listed. Anything after that is optional for added comfort. But you should have been honest. You are putting your friends in danger if they are relying on your survival knowledge which you don't have.

Camping isn’t some dark art. Throw up a tent and cook on a stove or fire. Don’t over think it.

food is the most important thing besides owning a tent. third most important thing is a fire and fourth is having something interesting to do to pass the time. $500 is a huge budget for camping gear, assuming that you're not gonna go backpacking or something. don't fall for expensive meme gear if you dont know what you're looking for and arent looking for something specific.

This. I'm also from NC and you should point out its going to be in the 30s at night and they will freeze their dicks off. The temps you see when you get up in the morning and go walk your dog or have a cigarette are what you would get all night long. Better to wait until late March/early April. Also in National Forests firearms laws match state laws. In NC if its a national forest (state parks and national parks vary) then you are fine open carrying whatever you legally own and you can conceal a pistol if you have the permit.
