Don't get me wrong, descending is difficult compared to flat terrain, but it's far less tiring than ascending, especially if you have trekking poles and even more so if it isn't climbing down boulders ad infinitum. Even if it is, it's still usually somewhat easier unless footholds are hard to come by. Then it's full-blown .5 mph nightmare mode.

I took a buddy on an overnight backpacking trip up a mountain with a pretty gradual climb. He wore jeans then insisted on carrying his tent. I tried to work with him to get it into his pack but nope. Goal was 10 miles to camp then back. We had to turn around at 5.

I've been hiking for ages now and always prefer downhill. Unless it's raining and there's boulders and rocks everywhere, in which case you're in for hell. It's not as physically exhausting, but it is definitely a challenge and very dangerous.

This is it OP. I brought a good 60 pounds of gear and 15lbs of water, I did just fine downhill and on flat terrain. Going up mountains? Had to stop every 10 minutes for a breather, that's half my bodyweight after I got sick earlier this year. Since then I've managed to bring my weight to around 10lbs, without sacrificing good quality shit for "!!!ben it's ultralight!!!! But my $6000 tent weighs 4 less grams than your shitty REI tent benis ahhhhaaaa".

I made this mistake in the backcounrty of Zion, I thought descending all day into the main canyon would be fun. It was, until the trail turned to rock about 7 miles from the end. I didn't have poles cuz I thought they were a meme, not making that mistake again.

Just unlucky I suppose. Once as a kid our car got hit by another car, their fault but I don't know how it happened cuz I was too young. That broke my legs. Once on my bike, a car didn't stop at a junction where you're supposed to stop because you can't see. That didn't break my legs but my bones were showing because a lot of my skin was gone and my muscles and joints kinda got fucked. Those are the main two. Any time I've fallen or done dumb shit that was my fault like falling off of horse's then it's never resulted in injury.

Slowest 3 miles of my life both ways and it stormed on the descent. After we got back home the next day I ordered his same poles immediately. Even on flat terrain they're nice to have, but I now consider them essentially for serious inclines.

The whole ounces become pounds shit used to make me cringe and, to a degree, it still does, but there's no denying that a 5lb difference in pack weight can be the difference between struggling and thriving. This becomes doubly true on difficult terrain. This brings up the point that if you don't help relieve a struggling friend, you're a terrible friend. A certain amount of hard-headedness is pretty standard male behavior, but most people tend to learn their lesson after suffering the humiliation of handing over some weight. Ask me how I know. I've been on both ends.

At some point before we even get outdoors they say something stupid and I know I'm going to be cutting them out of a bramble thicket and listening to them bitch about the weather or that mountain stream water is fucking cold and walking through it was a bad idea.

Most never take up the offer to go camping but the ones that do have the sense to ask and write down what they may need.

They don't retard. They carry part of the weight and help stabilize the backpack. If you stretch it too much to the point that your backpack makes a diagonal and lays on your hip while kinda hanging from the shoulders that will hurt you in long enough hikes. This is the only way a hip belt carries most of the weight, and I've seen plenty of "experienced" hikers truly believing this.

Literally everyone here who actually hikes has at one time or another carried their back in just their shoulder and found that most of the weight really is in their hips. Likewise, anyone putting on a pack that starts with the hip belt knows the shoulder straps barely carry shit.

I've never needed to get warmer outdoors clothes because I lived all my life in an area where it's pretty warm year-round. What the hell do I wear when hiking when it gets cold that isn't comfy jeans? Apparently that's the wrong thing to do (I get that if it's wet out) but all the "outdoors pants" I've seen look thin as fuck and like they'd tear if I glanced at them wrong, never mind if I brush against a tree or boulder.

Just wear layers. Tall socks, long johns or tights if you like men, regular pants, outer shell if you are worried about getting wet. Proper footwear is very important as your feet will get cold much faster than your core.

for longer hikes you would want something lightweight and denim tends to be heaver than a 1mm thin sheet of plastic fiber. Synthetics are usually simpler to wash by hand and quicker to dry in the wind. HOWEVER, I've lived in the south most of my life and I don't own any shorts- just jeans and canvas pants and a couple of pairs of dress pants in case someone dies or gets married. You get used to the heat and humidity and a good broken in pair of jeans are super comfortable to hike in and provide protection from brush. Even in my time in the great white north, canvas carpenter pants and a good pair of long johns and socks was good at 0 F for a few hours as long as I kept moving.

So true, it's beyond me when I hear people doing such claims proving they know jackshit about elementary physics. Whenever I'm approaching a climb, is a godsend to have the side straps when carrying my 10+ kg climbing equipment, however there is no way they "carry most of the weight" unless is laying it either on the groin or on the lower back depending on how tight or loose are the straps relative to the shoulder straps. When everything is tightly right set, they offset some of the weight to the hips, but you have to be a real monogoloid to believe it offsets most of the weight. Their primary purpose is to prevent the backpack from doing little swings in problematic terrain, avoiding your shoulders to make extra effort.
