That’s not a hip belt. It’s a piece of 1” polyester or nylon webbing. It’s designed for technical use like climbing or running, to keep the pack from swaying side to side. It doesn’t distribute a load onto your hips.

Replace ferrorod with another small bic. My lighters survive rounds in the washing machine, you wont ever have two separate Bics fail you. Put the vitamins and any medications into weekly pill containers. Replace the batsoupflu mask with a bandana which has other uses. Replace the boots with trail runners. Not him, but if you’re hiking you have everything you need in your pack (food, shelter, etc.). There’s no need for a large knife. People can toss out weird ass scenarios that don’t happen or just the generic “I’d rather have it and not need it...” but it’s all bullshit based on nothing.

Anyone who’s actually hiked knows it’s more comfortable to have a lighter pack. You do that buy not taking items that are heavier than they need to be.

Hip belts most certainly do carry the majority of a load. This is self evident.

Load a pack (I guess go to a tire that has them since you obviously don’t own one) then secure the hip belt. Does it fall down or backward? It will want to fall down, because your hips are holding the weight. Your shoulders just keep it from falling backward unless your pack is fairly heavy.

If you have a 10lb baseweight, a 4oz Mora is 2.5% of your total pack weight. Base weight is reduced by leaving behind or replacing multiple items.

I’ve used it, and yeah, you can hang a tarp with it. But you have no idea how bad it is because it’s the only thing you’ve ever used.

Boots have such a large range of what they are that you can’t really bullet point their aspects. There are breathable boots, but a lot of them aren’t. Some are generally light weight while others are leather, swapping weight for durability. There are comfortable boots, designed specifically for hiking with the shape and movement of the human foot as their primary model of design, and there are Timberlands.

Trail runners are a niche item, designed for a specific purpose, with function always being paramount. It’s not a fair comparison with boots, since boots can be any number of things.

Nylon cord is awful, it doesn't hold tension well and so shouldn't be used for shelters.

I would forgo the flint and steel and take a second lighter in a zip lock bag- because it dries tinder and is much faster, you can also skip tinder and just burn a twig.

I also take water purification tablets because why not.
You are taking a water bottle of some kind right?

Also I take food that's ready to eat, because it saves the cooking gear and removes another point of failure.

Trail runners are literally made for running on trails. I would imagine that the amount of force and stresses a 170lb man running through the woods on roots and rocks is greatly more than one walking slowly and carrying a 25-30lb pack.
Thousands of people hike the AT/PCT/CDT in trail runners every year, but somehow you think they’re not up to the task.

I love trail runners. I used to be so prone to blisters until I started using Altras.

The gripe people have with Altras is that they implode around 500-600 miles. It's especially frustrating because the sole always peels apart at the point of the toe, which should be a really fucking easy thing to fix if Altra cared.

That being said, I don't give a shit if I have to replace my altras every 500-600 miles. I love the shoes, and it's worth the expense to me. I feel like most of the people who complain about the quality aren't burning through 2 pair of shoes a year, they just love bitching on the internet

I've used paracord for pretty much decade now, both for a natural shelter and sleeping with a tarp/poncho. OP can definitely go with better alternatives, but that applies to virtually everything he posted. More importantly, he doesn't need to.

need to get a surplus blanket and I'm set. 6-8 brown tarp in the bag, need to get some dynaglide cordage for the tarp for tenting and a canteen to fit the holder. threw out the old one. baggies in top left are french lentil and curry soup mixes I made. gonna bring the canteen (1 liter) and four bottles of water for a total of 3 liters give or take. Wasatch front sc/out/ the flint is just for funzies. gonna bring some dryer lint. I'm forgetting a couple things but what else do I need/not need? also packed in the pack is a heavyweight carhartt jacket.

What kind of issues have you had with a bic exactly and what’s a “good alternative”? Besides the fact they don’t work when it’s cold (just palm them for a 15 seconds to warm them up), they pretty much work every light attempt. The alternative would be a zippo which evaporates way too fast, even with the hacks to slow evaporation down. So unless you’re also taking a white gas stove and can refill your zippo out of your fuel canister, a zippo is a bit of a pour choice. A butane torch lighter blows threw gas too fast, and those scripto lighters are way shorter than bics and are only good for turning into crack lighters
