Wouldn't it make more sense to just store it in a small ziploc bag? Are you going to re-apply the tape after every use? Won't it lose stickiness?

Do you get into emergencies a lot? At what point do you picture yourself using your shipping-tape-wrapped lighter? You know the lighter will work just fine if you wait 30 seconds for it to dry...
If you’re going out, just carry a headlamp, lighter or matches, and a multi tool. You don’t need a special lighter for your larpkit

I can’t picture a single situation where I’m in so much trouble but miraculously a lighter is going to save my life. A personal locator beacon will do you a whole lot more good than a lighter. For a lighter to do any good, you need a source of firewood. If you’re injured, you’re not gathering firewood. If the weather is that sour, your firewood will be either buried in snow or sopping wet. If you’re on the verge of freezing to death, a lighter is going to do jack shit. It’s either raining or snowing at that point. Are you going to spend 3hrs hunting the woods for reasonably dry firewood and praying that you can start a fire, with your lighter that will be just as wet once a single rain drop hits it, and then die when you can’t get anything more than a 4” fire going? Or are you going to march a few miserable hours out of the woods keeping your body temperature up and live? If you’re injured, then you’re not finding wood anyways and you die. A lighter isn’t doing jackshit to help you survive in any realistic scenario I see.

Why not carry a lighter/some fire starting tool? You can't ever plan for what your exact SHTF scenario will be, and for the cost and size I see no reason to limit yourself and not have the option. Better to have it and not need it.
