2)pit traps
3)snares(some ARE legal but require a license AND written/lookupable paperwork for usage/times/dates/taxes/etc)
4)booby-traps
5)anything local and federal hates not allowed

Regulated not illegal.
Its mostly about selling trapped game as that applies to commerce and trade.
So regulations are lawful based on trade.
If your not tradeing or conducting business then its left to local customs and traditions of the general community.
The point is traps its up to the community with the state county and others having a say as well.
Traps have be abused in the past so lots of old laws are on the books with some hard nose punishments to go with them.

I would recommend Ojibwa bird snares.
Not a lot of fooling around, can use natural cord/bark in place of wire, catches birds alive (because the best bird snares use a live bird as bait).

Placement of snares is often left out of discussion, IMHO most people who make snares just put them somewhere stupid and never catch anything
