Found while hiking a few miles from Lake Superior in the upper midwest. They look like some sort of nightmare creatures.

i love burning those. getting drunk in the woods with my friends we'd always start with all the nearby sticks and branches, and eventually i'd be like "fuck it, i'm going back to grab that dead pine tree we passed on the way" and i'll drag one of those mushy crumbly fuckers through the woods and toss it on

Apparently. I thought there was something strange about how they looked, only having branches on one side and what not. I hardly had an opportunity to set foot in the woods until I was an adult.

If I had to guess, the branches on the top probably rotted away first because they’re exposed to the most moisture (snow and rain)
