McCandless wanted to live /out/ but lacked training, equipment, and this led to a series of dumb decisions. He was a rookie succumbing to (avoidable) rookie mistakes.
Treadwell, on the other hand, had supplies and a tent, and repeated experience living with bears. Not only did he think "hey these grizzlies aren't so bad, Walt Disney was right and nature is cute and fuzzy", what's worse he deluded another person into believing the same, and then in a final act of dumbassery decided to stay longer than he'd ever had before, thinking he had "mastered" living with bears, leading to both of them getting killed.
