Short time lurker, first time poster, new to camping and would like to get my hands dirty. I don't know what kind of gear list I should follow, but I have some pretty basic stuff right now: a simple back pack, water bottles, machete, hiking boots and clothing. I also have a flashlight and some camping rope I bought today. In terms of weapons (for self defense) I only have the machete. I'm interested in buying a knife as well as building a handgun or buying bear spray.

Also how can I convince my parents to let me do this?

Any suggestion for my list or possible camping locations on the west side of the US?
