best autumn /out/ places in the US? Particularly for multiday backpacking. Looking for someplace to have a nice vacation, foliage viewing not really necessary.

Depends on how tourist-y you are willing to deal with.
I live in NC Appalachian mountains and there are loads of places for camping and hiking or backpacking but during the fall especially in peak foliage it can be rather crowded. Basically just avoid all of the instagram hotspots and you'll be fine.

cranberry wilderness, laurel fork wilderness, seneca creek backcountry, tea creek backcountry

lots of options for backpacking

also pic related north fork mountain trail

of the options I listed I think laurel fork wilderness would be the least crowded, it is a hidden gem of sorts

In WV it is going to be in the 30s and 40s at night and 50s probably during the day, but it is very dependent on elevation.

Thanks for the list. I'm just hoping it stays above freezing, my sleeping bag is decent but I hate the feeling for my body being toasty while my face/nose is freezing.
