I'm personally a fan of hibiscus. It's hearty, easy to care for and looks bloody stunning. Hard to find plants that will thrive indoors in Maine all winter long.

They are very deadly if ingested. Kids have died from drinking water that was used to put cut flowers in.

the thought that there are bulbs of nutrients that the plant absorbs when needed is absolutely astonishing to me.

Domesticated plant would be carrot or corn. My grandma used to have a huge garden when me and my cousin were ~5 and we'd eat tons of carrots and stick them back in the ground to hide it. For a wild plant I'm partial to clover, fresh mowed clover patches smell great.

We had a pretty good tree/plants thread on /an/ a week or so back but it's eventually gone 404. I've always loved bulbs but can't remember where I put most of my OC pics.

The weather has been so cold and shitty in the UK that my Alliums are only just attempting to appear above soil level at the moment.

My garlic and my Amaryllis haven't yet sprouted.
Here in the northeast USA its still a comfy average of 0 C.
They don't start sprouting till at least 5-10 C.

Usually my Alliums would be showing a lot of green at the moment but not even the Narcissi are in flower yet. Also, due to the lack of Summer last year I don't have a single flower bud on the Magnolia soulangeana.

For flowers, gotta be the sunflower. Pic related, one from my garden last summer.

Plants in general, probably kale. Nutritious, hardy, and not half bad as a decorative plant either.

Yeah, Digitalis purpurea is the common foxglove but there's quite a few cultivated varieties such as D. x mertonensis.

I just stake them up in my garden. I used to just about get away with growing Chamaerops humilis outdoors in the South of the UK but Chamaerops excelsa (Trachycarpus fortunei) could go down to minus 18C

I planted a load of garlic by a main road next to some woodland near to my house about 8 years ago and the plants spread like wildfire. I never harvest them, I just love the smell as I drive/cycle past.

That IS neat. Depending on where you live, that is an incredibly rare find, most places consider it endangered and picking/moving the plant actually is illegal. They cost a fortune to buy at a nursery for this reason.

Native wisteria like the one posted are the best. Way better than the asian ones, more controllable.

Daylilies top my list; they come in an astounding number of cultivars - this guy was one of the ones I planted last year, I can't wait for it to flower. The blood are supposed to be 14" in diameter.

Most bamboos, particularly in cooler climes, are not nearly as invasive as most people seem to believe and in fact a good number of commonly-cultivated species are known as "clumping" bamboos (as opposed to "running" bamboos) and naturally expand their territory at a very slow pace no matter the clime where they're grown. Most of the bad rap bamboos get actually comes from extremely annoying plants that LOOK a lot like bamboos but aren't and the fact that "don't ever get bamboo because it will overrun literally every single thing in your garden it happened to a friend of a friend of my sister who lives in Florida" is pretty firmly entrenched into the minds of many people because of those species.

They're the state flower of my state. I see pink and yellow lady slippers every year especially in the more moist areas but that one was rare indeed. Have never seen them before that or since.

you can use the pollen or you can dry the roots and grind them up and use them both as a sort of flour for baking and you can eat the hearts of the stocks. there is also a little flowering spike you can cook and eat like mini corn on the cob

Heliopsis helianthoidies, its like a small perennial sunflower that blooms from June-October and is native to most of the US, but seldom seen.

It likes moist areas and will even tolerate down to only a few hours of sun a day and still bloom like crazy. It's a great plant.

I know two people who are totally obsessed and have even submitted new finds to whatever organization keeps track of those things. I've had a blast taking my native plants field guide on hikes and tried to identify as many flowers as I could. I ended up getting into foraging this way (a lot of invasives near me turned out to be edibles).

All Tulips are great but I have a soft spot for the wild, species tulups. These are the ones that were originally bred to become the tulips we see in gardens today.

They're much shorter plants but longer-lived and multiply by seed and bulb offsets unlike most tulips.

Tulip humilis is my favorite, I have a bunch of these.

When I started to teach myself to garden at age... (fuck, 7?) they were the first things I've tried because I read up on them and they looked beautiful. I actually got them to grow and spent fucking forever reading up on how to help them survive. I also put in... I don't even remember what the flower is but the stalk like 18 inches tall with broad leaves growing I put those at my dad's house and they bloom every summer. It's fucking awesome.
