in terms of environmental destruction, oil drilling is fairly tame.
now imagine they found a diamond or gold seam there. they'd turn mountains into craters and destroy everything in their path. the rivers would be filled with tainted aqua regia and everything in them would be killed. the forests would rot from the lack of nutrients pulled from the rivers by the local fauna, the trees would die from the poisoned water, and the entire region would see its natural resources decay into a barren gravekl pit.
