Most serious hikers know that boots are retarded. They are usually for lanklets with weak ankles and shit. A pair of trail runners is all you need for massive distance and vert comfortably

If you have very, very strong leg and foot muscles from constant hiking and exercise like Andrew Skurka, no you probably don't need boots.

But you're not Andrew Skurka, OP, and neither is anyone on this board, and the vast majority of people are better off using boots because they hike infrequently on weekends away from their office jobs.

I mean, you don't have to be Andrew Skurka. Someone who is sedentary could probably benefit from more support, but as long as you're reasonably active, you're careful, not on ridiculous terrain with a ridiculous load, etc. etc. you should be fine and better with lighter, less supportive shoes. Especially if you're also using trekking poles. And using less supportive shoes will train your feet.

Like not to go all whatever, but traveling long distances over ground on unsupported feet is literally the foundation of the survival strategy our bodies evolved in.

I don't blame anybody who likes trail shoes, they have some nice upsides, but I wear boots daily for work so it doesn't really bother me to wear them while hiking for fun. Ive actually thought about a pair of hiking shoes for just day to day life stuff and little day hikes but if I'm going more than a few miles with some weight on my back I'd just rather have boots. I've seen way too many people twist their ankles hiking that would've been perfectly fine if they'd just worn a regular pair of boots.

Then OP comes along and posts an appeal to authority with a gear list showing a guy who hiked, what, like 2,000 miles in the back country of Alaska, then another article where the same guy (Andrew Skurka) has a list of trail runners that he suggest to the people he takes on guided trips off trail. Skurka also explains, in detail, why those work (as well as a lot of popular choices that don’t, and why). Someone argued against that as an /out/ celebrity... but that’s like saying Mike Tyson’s boxing advice doesn’t matter because he’s just a boxing celebrity.

I’ve been wearing trail runners exclusively for all my hiking and backpacking adventures since the early 2000’s. My ankles have weakened a lot in the past 8 years or so but I just started using trekking poles and I’m fine and dandy. I wore theses Cascadias on a 80 mile, 5 day 4 night backpacking trip over the summer. I will only wear boots if I’m doing cold weather /out/ activities.

Snow, ice, and winter excludes, what do boots protect your feet from better than trail runners? I’m sure there’s some edgecase scenarios but I haven’t run across them in the northeast, where we have some of the oldest, gnarliest, wettest, rock and root strewn trails in the country. Out west, a lot of the trails are built to newer, actually decent standards and graded for horses, so those are generally in much better shape than those I encounter on a weekly basis. Yet I’ve personally never had the thought cross my mind that I had to have heavy, goodyear welted boots to make it up a mountain.

I like boots because it's pretty rocky where I am, and I like my skin to remain on my ankles. The main issue is at the 6 gorrilion river crossings where your feet slide between rocks from the algae.
Have shoes for where I know I don't need boots, though it isn't often.
