Best is going barefoot in the snow. My feet don't get cold anymore until -25 and the snow is no longer powdery, but icy and abrasive. That's my current barefoot limit where I can tolerate it by breathing and heating myself with adrenaline... But at that point I want to put on shoes because the ice sticks to the feet and it's generally uncomfortable; and at certain temperatures there is that ice sheet from thawing and refreezing that doesn't feel good on bare feet. If it's powdery at -20, that's pretty pleasant though.
Other than that, shoes are good for going into chicken coops/areas with animal feces, or certain terrains.
But generally it's easier to do some things with bare feet. The foot has better tread than most shoes. Traversing smooth rocks is easier with bare feet. Slick surfaces. Etc. Climbing slick surfaces is also easier with bare feet...
