How would you recommend learning to sail as an absolute beginner OP? Maybe joining a sailing club or taking a class? Finding someone who knows the ropes to take you under their wing? Also,

Got my boat a few weeks ago for $1000, trailer included. I still haven't sailed it, I've motored around a few times, but I'm too scared to try to let loose the sails without someone showing me the ropes first

I'm a huge amateur too actually haha. I think you're already off to a good start thinking about joining a club or class. Before that though I'd recommend doing your fair share of reading, and also practicing knot-tying and radio communication skills on-shore.

Have a read from the Pastebin links in the OP, most of the information there was curated from posts from previous threads. There's also a link to an epub version of Captn Fatty's book that a kind anon uploaded.

The common advice is to show up at a yacht club and volunteer to be a shit kicker on someone else's boat for a race.

That was too intimidating for me socially so I just bought a shitty trailer sailor, motored to a spot with low winds and lots of room, raised the sails and bumblefucked my way through it. Youtube has plenty of good sailing basics videos. I wrote down a list of notes and some diagrams of points of sail and used those to refer to.

On a little sloop rig there's only really a couple of sheets to worry about and then you just adjust until the tell tales fly straight.

I'm probably never going to be an expert sailor without some lessons but just getting yourself moving along is far from the hardest part of sailing.

I would highly recommend buying a cheap sailing dinghy. Just think about it, unlimited access to your own vessel, a cheap way to get started, also happens to be the best way to learn to sail. I bought a dinghy months ago and I go out as much as I can. Besides purchasing price, every sail has been free so far.

Do I know enough that I don't need to be too terribly afraid of buying a boat that needs work? I've been fortunate to grow up with a father who knows a lot of stuff and has done most of it firsthand, and who had the time to pass the skills and the interest in using them along to me.

Give it to me straight guys, are beach cats worth anything for learning how to sail a bigger boat? I see plenty of them for sale in decent condition which tells me that people don't hold onto them long but I'm wondering if I can buy one, spend a few seasons muddling my way through learning to sail, then onsell it and buy something bigger if I'm still interested.

They can jibe, reach, tack and go to windward so you gain experience with practical sailing basics. You've got a Jib and Main . The rig is the same as most S M L sailing yachts.

Beach cats have no centerboards, so they cannot sail as close to the wind. This isn't much of a downside if you are at a beach, where you reach back and forth in constant sea breeze blowing into shore. In most lakes, it can be a big disadvantage depending on where the wind comes from and what direction you launch from.

It's always been a dream of mine to be a liveaboard. I think once I graduate from uni I'll try like Hell to get a job in a place near the coast and then save up money and get a boat to live on. I was thinking something around 30 feet would be perfect. I don't have sailing experience but I have a fairly wide range of practical skills.
Do you guys have any recommendations on certain sailboat manufacturers or ones to stay away from? Any particular years that are better or worse?

Not really, it's pretty hard to get fibreglass boats wrong. And they are made in such low volume that focussing on this brand or that is just going to narrow the field too far.

Bought pic (for ants) related last summer for 1800€. Tight little sloop. Planning to sail around the archipelago with it next summer.
I had very limited sailing experience prior buying, but the owner showed me the basics like gybing and tacking. It's really not that hard when you get the hang of it.

Any kind of tablet or even phone with gps should work.
If I remember right you need to provide Navionics with your own maps. I can see two possible causes for the gps not working: You might have aligned these maps incorrectly or then your device is faulty. Either way I'd try different software and/or different device

How accepted liveaboards are varies from state to state, and if you want to stay in a marina, then from marina to marina. In terms of travel there's no issue in moving around except maybe corona restrictions. And as far as I understand in the US your boat can be registered in any state and used in any other in perpetuity.

The panhandle is pretty forgiving. Worst thing you have to worry about is hitting a rock or mudflat at low tide.
Once you come past Glacier Bay it gets a bit more dangerous.

In the summer, we pretty commonly have situations where people’s engines shutoff pretty close to the jetties which could potential my be fatal. The surf here is absolutely devastating here though (commonly 16-18’ breakers) so must recreational fisherman stay up river or near the basins to drop crab pods. The PNW is more about training coxswains to be able to handle 30’ surf than it is a search and rescue area.

For online dating, if I put pics and bio stuff up about how I live on a sailboat, will I just be attracting girls who want the lifestyle more than they want me? The boat is only 30ft too so it's not impressive in the grand scheme of yachts but I also imagine there's the odd girl that would assume live aboard = caused up and comes gold digging.

Another question on my mind is regarding security and travel. I have family in land-locked states, and I was wondering if there's any kind of typical procedure if I would have to leave and take a plane somewhere for a few days or longer. I would hate to go inland to a family gathering or a funeral and come back to find that my "house" had been stolen. Sure break-ins happen to homes, but in my mind boats just seem riskier in that aspect.

Insulation is the solution to condensation. Every bit of the hull above the water line will need to be covered in insulation, preferably in for the form of self-adhesive foam sheets applied carefully so that there's no air trapped underneath.

Some amount of condensation is part and parcel of boat life.

Hi Seamen, wanting some advice. Want a pair of binoculars for the boat. I have a good pair for backpacking so these can be heavy. $200ish price range and also want advice on a inflatable raft or dinghy that will fold up pretty small for stowage but also not cheap garbage.

Yea and that's good. If they wanted you for you you wouldn't need a dating profile. That's just hokey fairy tail bullshit. No one finds The One.

You're right to lead with your boatlife. 1 because it will attract girls who fantasise about the boatlife like you do/or did when you got into sailing so there's a connection there and 2. because the average kitchen size of pre1980s is a deal breaker for many women let alone turning sideways and stopping to get down the hall.

Sailing got me laid and I'm a fucking terrible sailor I don't even know half the terms in this thread. I just got shouted at on a tallship for 3 years. The less seriously you take dating the more success you will find. Use the site to hook up with girls who want to go for a sail. Have fun. See who wants to go again. Some might use you. Most will ignore you. Who cares. Your boat will stay loyal until you get divorced.

Don't hype it up too much for yourselves newfriends. Just go out and do it. Sailing doesn't have to be a fine science. It's just a plane wing in reverse. Pull the halyard until you have a sail (This ones tight) and sheet it off until it's a triangle. (Not tight). If it fills up. It's good. If it whips about and vibrates (luffing) you haven't got it yet. If it fills up but towards you. It's bad. That's the worst that can happen. You'll stop or slow down. The sail won't capsize you in weather you would put a boat in the water with.

Theres a little streamer at the top of the mast to let you know the wind direction. You want it to point forward but you should be able to feel the wind direction on your face after a while. Bring some oars if you don't have a motor and you'll have nothing to lose.

It's easy to learn hard to master stuff. Made hard to learn by theory. Primordial man didn't have his yachtmasters and unfurling a sail will put you ahead of 30% of yachtowners.
