Why is paracord always recommended among preppers over other types of rope like amsteel and dyneema?

I have some budget paracord that's clearly not capable of holding 550 pounds, and I'm wondering whether or not I should buy real 550 paracord, amsteel, or dyneema. Which type of cable or types of cable should I stack up on?

I heard that 750 is twice the cost, even though it's only 36% stronger. Wouldn't simply doubling up on the 550 cord you use for something be more effective, or is using one rope always better than using multiple ropes?

What do you mean by that, anon? What would be the point of using rope if it can't maintain the knots you tie with it?

Having a lower coefficient of friction just means means you need to learn more secure knots. And only if you actually plan on putting a lot of weight on it.

UHMWPE is slippery enough that it can slide apart on knots that work fine with other materials.

It's not weak though since with a good knot it would be able to handle more weight than other materials.

What are some knots you could easily get away with with paracord that would be a bad idea with dyneema? Which knots should you tie with dyneema?

This is largely when it's new.
Once it's had a bit of use and softened up you'd hardly notice it.
I use heaps of it in my whitewater kit. Smaller dia. prusiks bite the line like a mofo.
Feels weird when you use them for ascending occasionally, putting your weight on such thin line.

That was sort of sarcasm I guess, why did they stop st 550? But you are correct. I guess I'm just thinking that the rope type cordage, like ITT, is like a real good knife. 550 is like a multitool.

Can confirm this. You basically want to throw a couple of half-hitches on anything you tie when it's new.
Double fisherman's etc are fine.
Potentially fucking dangerous if you don't know they're prone to slippage or aren't familiar with it and grab one out of someone else's kit. I always make sure I keep dyneema/spectra on me, and some regular nylon if there's a chance someone I don't know will be using it. Also remind guys what they're borrowing if they need it, regardless of experience.
The sewn slings are the absolute business.

It really comes down to use. My outings are 90% hiking. I take specific types of line for specific jobs. My tarp guy lines are Zing It because paracord stretches over time, especially when wet. My structural ridge line is Dynaglide for the same reason, but it can be spliced into a dog bone. I have AmSteel loops as part of my suspension (which is pretty standard) because paracord doesn’t give a 5:1 safety factor. The only “extra” rope I have is 50’ of zing it for hanging my food, and that’s an arborist throw line so obviously it’s better than paracord.

This is my shelter configuration. I use paracord for tying the tarp to the trees (Siberian hitch on one side) and use a thinner cord for my guylines on each corner for tying them down to the tent pegs. What the "best rope" is would depend on the purpose.

Yes, they absolutely are. And I use three different brands for three different purposes, because I recognize that 7/64” AmSteel is a little overkill for tarp suspension or hanging a bag of food.

I always have a good chunk of 550 cord in my bag, but my truck also has static climbing rope, and solid-braided nylon. 550 would be shit for lowering myself, but nylon is too heavy to lug around for a bear bag, and climbing rope is mainly for fun

Splicing is the best method to make both fixed and adjustable loops.
t. Friend works for Sampson Rope and travels the world splicing amsteel blue for massive ships. Don’t tie it!

In a survival situation you don’t need strength you need lashing, clothing repair, fishing line, nets, tarp and shelter constructions. Try going out instead of reading specs on cordage

I love using bank line. It's cheap, and comes in many different tests so you can use it for fishing or for shelters, lots of applications. It has tar on it so it is super durable and weather proof.

7 strand 550 Test paracord and bank line because it's sticky, and won't stretch as much as paracord. Also can be used for fire starter in an emergency.

paracord is reccomended because it strands into multiple smaller lines very easily. not because of its load capacity, although the load capacity is plenty high for outdoors usage anyways. you dont need 1/4 inch synthetic line for OHL to tie down a tent or lift a bear bag.

let's be real folks paracord is a pretty shitty product for most of what we do, the fact that dyneema braid is now gaining popularity for no reason isn't much better. paracord is stretchy and a bitch to untie unless you use specific knots/low load applications. its also bulky

Why not learn to make rope, twine, and thread.

I use the same lines that came with my tent otherwise use cotton twine occasionally. 300 ft spool at dollar tree, it's strong enough.
