I have been thinking a lot about going hog hunting. All those videos on YouTube make it look so much fun.

How does wild/feral hogs taste like? Is it as good as the pork I get from the store? Also should I be worried about catching diseases (namely leptospirosis, trichinellosis and rabies/pseudorabies) from dressing or eating them?

Yeah. It is smart but gay to wear rubber gloves when cleaning, and you must be sure to cook it to 160 degrees.

Fun as hell, but I have to disagree with the other anon and say I think they taste like shit. Piglets are passable though.
Also yes he is correct about it being possible to catch stuff and if you go in the summer I wouldn't expect to get any meat since it will spoil before you could reasonably dress the pig. You'd have to have a cooler on hand or something. This time of year you should be fine though.
Another side note, everyone I know who goes, myself included, carries a sidearm just in case of a jam and am enraged pig. Unlikely, but worth carrying.

Drop that recipe then. I've only ever had it prepared in restaurants, including ones that specialized in game, so I've been put off bothering to cook the ones I kill. I know this will piss /out/ off, but I genuinely don't give a shit. They're annoying to have on the property even if they are fun to hunt. They're competing with out deer and they can fuck right off.

Hogs usually travel in groups from 3-30 or more depending on how deep in the boonies you are or how infested the place is with them. After the first shot they're gonna start running and sometimes if the wind is fucky they'll make a b-line towards you and at that point if you don't have an auto its probably best to get climbing. I usually hunt them with just a rifle and make damn sure to have a tree before I shoot. I've also got to agree with him on the fact that adults are really gamey, but younger hogs/piglets are pretty damn good. If you have the time/money take their meat to the meat market in Muenster, TX. Whether it's adult or young they can do some magic German shit to them that makes the sausage out of this world. If you get into trapping you can also corn-feed the adults for a while and they eventually get less gamey.

Anon you prepare wild hog just like pork. In general I make it all into sausage. Buy a game cook book if you want recipes, I suggest The Meateater Fish and Game Cookbook: Recipes And Techniques For Every Hunter And Angler by Steven Rinella

Meat taste depends on the hog. Big swamp boar sucks. Smaller hogs are better. If they feed more on crops or out of feeders they taste best. Frankly I just make pulled pork in a crock pot. Works for pretty much every other type of meat I’m not wild about as well. That shit will make just about anything tender and bbq sauce can make almost anything taste good. Except snow geese. Fuck snow geese. But thats a conversation for a different thread.

Wouldn’t worry about meat spoilage either. Just bring a cooler. Like I have on literally every hunt I have ever been on. I don’t generally hunt them but if they’re coming into a feeder and the deer aren’t there close enough to sundown for my liking then they’re fucked.
