NPR's assessment that this historic wildfire season might permanently destroy forested areas is a month old now. The situation hasn't improved.

We are facing an apocalypse because of inaction towards climate change.

If you want to have any /out/ left to enjoy within the next 10 years you might be wise to vote for people who acknowledge climate change and the myriad of catastrophic problems it will cause in the near future.

It's not entirely incorrect, though. Healthy fires are relatively frequent and relatively low intensity while the kind of fires we're seeing now - due to forest management practices, not "climate change" - are the type that are intense enough to kill off basically everything, including mature trees that would otherwise shrug off less intense fires. This means that instead of starting with whatever vegetation survived, these burned areas aer essentially starting from scratch with a tiny fraction of the resources they would normally have - those seeds and mycorhizae and microbes and root systems that normally survive were cooked to death by the heat of the fire. It's like starting a garden in bare compacted topsoil versus amended garden soil that's been properly mulched.

These stupid fucks are going to be hoisted on their own petard.

I work for Rocky Mountain National Park; just got evacuated yesterday. The situation is beyond fucked. The East Troublesome fire blew up faster than anyone thought it could; ran 14 miles in 12 hours through beetle-kill jackstraw, jumped the Divide like it wasn't there and bombed down beautiful Forest Canyon. There isn't a single historic building left on the west side of the park. And between that and Cameron Peak fire, there's really nothing left of the park that wasn't already lost to mass visitation. Crowding in those spaces is just going to double now.

I hiked around Cleveland national forest in San Diego when I was a kid.
There was a carpet of pine needles 3 feet thick covering the forest floor.
Instead of burning off every year or two naturally, the forestry service has been putting out every fire.
Now the detritus builds up year after year, decade after decade until the fuel level is so immense that any fire turns catastrophic.

This. Decades of forest service mismanagement across administrations from both parties have resulted in what we're seeing now. Seasons being hotter than before and with more intense winds definitely aren't helping things but the main reason these catastrophic wildfires keep popping up year after year is because of the USFS disregards the natural order of things in favor of keeping fire far far away from precious mansions and ranches.

The largest wildfire in the US's history occurred before quick suppression was the standard practice. It's more nuanced than just throwing out the vague term "forest mismanagement". There's always gonna be non-merch trees and brush to carry fire and no land owning entity is going to want to be in charge of large, frequent prescribed fires right next to the urban interface.

What I was taught in my fire ecology class was that poor forest management left shit loads of combustibles, which made these sterilizing super fires possible, and climate change was also contributing to how dry and how many lightning strikes these forests experienced.

You are correct that current wildfires are not nearly as widespread as they were in the past, we do not have adequate direct accounts of fire ecology for these regions prior to settlement. Even in the southeast (settled much earlier) we have few accounts of the fire ecology for this region prior to major settlement.

Of course that is not the case now, especially in California where environmental regulations and government oversight on logging operations are arguably the most heavily monitored in the US.
Also site your fucking sources, a quote with a name is not enough.

Logging is not going to save us and it is not a silver bullet. We have to incorporate more effective and systematic fuels management strategies, implement and adhere to prescribed fire management plans, and reconsider how we approach the issue of wildfire management. The solution could be "just don't live there", but good fucking luck implementing that.
