Train hopping culture is by and large extremely stupid. If you're smart about it though, plan ahead, are willing to take risks and take it seriously it (can) be rewarding. Picture is circa 2014 somewhere in the cascades. I rode on and off for a few years. If you're on the east coast don't even bother imo. You'll be waiting 90 percent of the time and riding short, shitty routes. Anywhere else be prepared to live extremely rough. Some of the best camp sites are off rail sidings. My only story really worth telling isint so much of a story as me being absolutely fucking retarded and thinking I could ride under a bradley tank hooked up to an intermodal going east. My plan was to crawl inside the tank once we left idaho, worker came along and disconnected the car right in front of mine and the section of train I was on started accelerating so fast in the opposite direction I couldn't react and just threw myself off the car entirely. Left all my shit under that bradley besides whatever I had in my pockets at the time. Was later told by that same worker that section was heading directly to a base in the NM desert. I can imagine them finding my shit and just thinking I fucking died in the desert somewhere. Amazing. Look into old riders forums. 90's/00's. But understand the game has changed and security is much tighter. If Union Pacific services your area, get the customer service number and call in car #s for a beginning dest and end dest. Can be extremely helpful. Fuck BNSF. Norfolk is pretty chill. Ride DPUs when possible. Closest thing to a comfy riding experience you'll get.

By that point in my life I had a Daughter and it just confirmed to me that the whole idea of riding trains that we have is a thing of the past. From what I understand riding intermodal is the “safe” way but it’s asking to get caught... paradoxically. I would definitely have some plan to bond out of jail, fucking police state and all that.
Anyway the reason being that on the cargo trains you get dropped off in the middle of fuck nowhere with nothing and die ?in a nutshell?

Unless you're popping locks on train cars or fucking with the air brakes you're probably going to get at the least a confused and stern warning or at worst a couple nights in jail for trespassing. This is not to say there aren't bulls that take pride in busting riders or feds that will throw the book at you in certain towns or areas. Basically just don't get caught,cdo your research, If you have half a brain and situational awareness, you'll be fine. Most dangerous part of it is environmental. Lots of ways to get hurt on and off trains.

Quick QRD on cars: Canadian grainers have holes you can climb inside on either end. Cramped but mostly concealed. Look for smaller containers on intermodals. You want the deep ones with a floor. Box cars with open doors are rare but comfy. Be warned there have been cases of trains coming to a hard stop, doors flying closed and trapping riders inside. Coal cars are a no no from me. Can unexpectedly head into processing plants and people have been crushed alive by falling coal. Trailer carriers offer good concealment but terrible protection from the elements. Junk cars are old and shitty, can be a comfy ride if empty. I suggest avoiding catching moving trains so you can properly sus out a car before choosing a ride. Some can have next to no bottom "riding suicide" is exactly this, and is not an overdramatic term. Try and scope out the whole train during your ride, use long curves to your advantage and look for DPUs, sometimes near the middle or rear of the train. These are empty power units. Typically they only check them every 10-20 hours or at a crew change. Whatever you do, do not fuck with any of the controls in these. Ignore oil cars, lumber cars or any military shit.

Both of these statements are nonspecific. They tell me nothing substantial, and the very implication that you're talking about the security situation is weakened by the fact that these statements are capped on both ends by things that have nothing to do with security.

You're overthinking it. There's zero way to obtain an understanding of a yards security besides testing it yourself. Every town and yard is different, just try observing. Stay away from spots with obvious trainfag graffiti of possible, they are aware of well marked spots and will watch them in bigger yards. While en route on trains just stay out of sight with en emphasis on staying hidden while in yards or well populated areas. Avoid riding cars too close to the main power units. Don't hang out of the train or climb all over the cars in daylight. Don't be stupid. Maximum security exists closer to the boarder. FLIR and other tech gets used. I suggested UP because in my experience they are the most lax company of them all. BNSF has more military contracts and tends to take security more seriously. Again, it's situational. Cities like Eugene Oregon have a singular bull who only patrols ever so often. Cities like pocatello idaho have feds patrolling yards. It's completely unpredictable. You have to be able to adapt with zero information on the fly if you don't want to get caught.

But anyway, lighting shit on fire is far easier than trying to get cold outside in FL. It's unlivable. The Natives didn't live in FL so much as the washington state area. Predictably the only decent state in the USA politically is Oregon. I'd try to find the public land ans stay there, that's my plan, but I may yet find like 300ish usd and greyhound on over there instead of train hop. However, if I had 300ish, you know I'd just buy a gun. So it'll take a while.

I've heard of people that have done this and got fucked. Security isn't that bad honestly the worst you have to watch out for is BNSF and the worst that ever happened to me is they followed my train for a day and a half and stopped my train in the middle of a corn field outside of galesburg. They pulled up to the car I was riding we jumped off when we slowed to about 22 mph and started walking the fuck away from the train.

My buddy got the cops called on us about 5 miles away asking people for rides and they confirmed that bnsf was looking for us but personally they didn't really give a fuck and gave us a ride into town let us shower up and got us a pizza then dropped us off at the wrong hop out so we had to walk around for fucking days trying to figure out the hump yard.

East coast sucks dick honestly it's easier to back track west up then east.

Most of the time your not going to go to jail. I've only been to jail twice over train hopping in 7 years. The first time the local sheriffs misinterpreted the law and tried to charge us with felony interference with crucial american infrastructure but it wasn't and charges dropped 8 days later in court. If the bull had been there it would have been a nothing burger and he said that in court. The second time east of nola me and my friend ran from the bull so he put is in jail for processing but we got mcdonalds on the way and he didn't put us in opp so that went about as well as it could have.
