>>1915262You don't need to buy retarded gimmicked, useless, cheap shit marketed to people like you who don't know what they're doing. For getting started with /out/ activities you just need some basic shit, that's not too expensive, and that is descent quality. Here are my suggestions for what you should start off with:
1. Get a normal looking backpack that looks /out/, isn't out the ass expensive, and doesn't make you look like a cityfag larper.
2. Get a good quality fixed blade knife that you like the look of, that isn't fuck off massive and out the ass expensive.
3. Bring 2 or maybe 3 water bottles, and a number of granola bars or whatever.
4. Bring a basic booboo kit consisting of some ducktape, nonstick pads, anti-biotic ointment, and pain-relievers of your choice.
5. Whistle, map of the area (use your phone if you want), space blanket (It's light, takes up very little space, so why not), flashlight, a bic lighter and/or matches (If you end up using these, don't start a forest fire.)
6. You don't need to buy special hiking boots, just get a good pair of shoes that you like and that feel comfortable, use those. Or go barefoot, that's actually quite nice, just keep a pair of moccasins in your pack, just in case.
7. Whatever pants you like, I wear some milsurp cargo pants. Just something comfortable, and durable.
8. What you're going to wear in terms of shirts and jackets is pretty dependent on where you are and the time of year and all, but generally I would recommend a short sleeve, long sleeve, and then a jacket. Tie them around your waist if you get hot. Get a good hat.
In order to find a place to hike, just google trails near me or look at the U.S. forest service map:
