what is the best camping knife out of the box? i don't really want to spend an hour sharpening a stupid knife.

Not sure about camping, but I usually carry one of those in each hand for self defense.

Mora Companion is cheap and works fine out of the box. That being said on my first night out with one it already started to chip slightly.
For EDC and all around camping just get a leatherman if you have the money. Never had a problem with mine and its been beaten to hell for years. The blade holds an edge well enough too.

If its more than a dayhike I tend to bring a small axe with me. With that and the leatherman I get most jobs done without problem.

different tools for different jobs, man. a walmart multitool with a blade should be fine for cutting cord or opening food packs. what do you actually need a knife for specifically?
