I wouldn't recommend using the starter logs you find in stores because they have toxic chems in them and you don't want to cook on that.
You can make your own pretty easily. All you need is an empty egg carton (not the styrofoam type), an empty can, vegetable shortening and something to act as a wick, like non-toxic dryer lint. You're going to put the vegetable shortening in the can and put the can in a bain marie. Then you put a small piece of dryer lint in each spot in the egg carton and pour the melted shortening on top. Each little egg alcove should be filled with melted shortening. Let it dry out and harden, then cut each egg alcove from the carton, and you have small flammable fire starters that you can take into the woods and that will burn for 15 minutes once ignited.
