What's some of the better and worse features about the headlamps you've used?

Also, general headlamp discussion thread.

Personally looking at pic related. Decent price, lightweight, waterproof, decent battery and nice settings. Anyone got any experiences with it?

My friend had a headlamp with a "red light" option which put a filter or something over the light causing the light to only emit low, dull, infrared light. He used it for situations when the white light was just too bright. I really liked it because it wasn't harsh on my eyes. No idea what brand it was though.

I’ve had a pretty basic Petzl for years, and it hasn’t failed me yet. It’s got red and white lights, strobes in both colors, a lower intensity setting for the white light, and a sliding lens that further diffuses the beam. Got it from a Walmart for fairly cheap, I think.

I got a 90's petzl I converted to LED and 2 parallel 18650s. It seems to just last forever. I stepped the voltage to 9v and the bulb is rated 12v and it's bright enough and only needs charged quarterly.
Before that I had a black diamond but I put a slightly different battery in it for half an hour and it ruined it. It still works but it's hard to switch on when it's off and hard to switch off when it's on so I just use the petzl.

It ran off one of those huge wet batteries and an incandescent bulb before. There was enough space to put a buck converter, 2x18650 cell holder and spare bulbs in the battery compartment.

A red light is a must have. I’ve heard this called a “map light” before, the idea being that it doesn’t reflect light off of a map after your eyes have adjusted to the dark. I like to read at night, so it’s important to me. Also I find that a spot light just makes it easier to see than a flood light, and it reflects trail markers much better. I feel like a dimmer is ok but not necessary. And it has to be adjustable so I can tilt it down. I’ve found that more important when doing things like cooking or setting up a shelter at night. I prefer replaceable batteries over usb charging, mostly because my headlamp has found its way into use around the house. If I’m only using it to hike I can plan ahead and charge it a few nights before I leave, but if I’m working under my house to sister a floor joist due to termite damage, it’s easier to toss in some new AAA’s.

I have a different petzl (hm50r) and think it’s an outstanding light. I wouldn’t buy the one in your pic because the buttons are exposed and will get clicked on in your pack, leaving you with a dead battery when you need to use it

I was just at REI and saw the Petzl headlamps. I liked how the buttons didn’t stick out too much and it needed a firm press (and hold?) to turn on. Might buy it tonight.

I didn’t mean petzl, read that somewhere and had it on my brain - I have a fenix hm50r and I like it. I do also have a petzl though (AAA batteries) that has treated me well for 5 or 6 years before the battery terminals started corroding.

I don’t have an über expensive headlamp I don’t think ($60), but it wasn’t dirt cheap either. It was the cheapest lamp I could find that had the features I desired (rechargeable, waterproof to 2 meters, ability to accept a CR123 battery so it’d work well down to -40F, one button operation, button recessed, metal body). Most cheap headlamps will be missing some/most of those conveniences. For a more casual hiker than I, a cheaper headlamp is perfectly adequate - although I’d stay away from ultra cheap. Trying to walk out of the woods in the dark because your headlamp is a cheap piece of shit doesn’t particularly sound fun.

I can absolutely recommend Zebra Light if you are willing to spend a little bit more. I got the H600Fc Mk IV recently and have been really pleased with it. The UI seems a bit overwhelming at first, but once you get used to it it becomes very intuitive and gives you access to a wide range of programmable lumen settings (.08Lm-1568Lm on mine). The fraction of a lumen "moonlight" settings are great for reading at night without ruining your night adapted eyes and the 1568Lm "Turbo" mode is like having instant daylight for your immediate surroundings. I also really enjoy the slightly warmer 4000k on the headlamp as it doesn't feel as unnatural as 6500k LEDs do at night (For me a 4000k headlamp with a 6500k spotlight flashlight is an ideal setup for night hiking). A downside is it must be run off a 18650 and not 2 CR123s, if that is a requirement for you. I would recommend getting a floodier headlamp as it is nice to have your field of vision filled with light rather than having to constantly turn your head to illuminate different targets.

I got a fenix flashlight probably 8 months or more ago for $45. Has proven to be worth every penny, I'd assume headlamps are the same way. Good lights are an amazing upgrade, ease of use and ergonomics are important.

My bushnell pro headlamp has red LEDs. It's super useful for not ruining your night eyes and also for sneaking up on animals and fish.
I also like that headlamp has independent spot and area lights.

I've worked with a lot of SF guys over the years, best of the best gear bla, bla. So I ask one guy, what head lamp he was running, he said he got it at Walmart for $15 bucks.
My fav has been the Petzl Tikka. Used from the Arctic to Argentina. Has a red lens and several light settings, easy to sleep with around my neck at night too so no searching for it when I need it. Learned that the hard way once.

red lenses are used a lot in the military, the idea is that they're not as bright and harder to see by others. they're also supposed to help keep your night vision from getting messed up from white light.

I got a Petzl Aktik Core or something for trail running, it's nice. It has 3 brightness settings for white light (I think lasting 120h, like 10h, and 3h?) and is really too bright at the highest setting. It also has a red light you can switch to if you want to preserve your night vision or not wake up someone at camp.
It's comfy when running except if you don't tilt it at all, in which case it kind of goes "tack, tack, tack" with every step.
Before that I had a no name headlamp my dad got a few years ago, it was fine but when running would move too much.
For camping both are fine but the red light makes a huge difference when you just wanna take a piss or find your water bottle, I don't have to wake up the gf or be a lighthouse while pissing.

Thrunite TH10. All steel case, runs off single 18650 or 2 cr123s.
Max out put is like 800+ with a really nice throw / spill.
Fire light mode is great, provides the perfect amount of light for your small tasks.

bought some cheapo $15 headlight from amazon with two white-light intensities and a red-light switch, and it works totally fine. Not quite sure what people get out of those fancier headlights, i'd rather spend that money on other /out/ things

Petzls only go up to ipx4 or some bs anyway. That pretty much eliminates them as an option for me.

Over the years I've owned a handful of headlamps but surprisingly far and away the best all around has been this walmart special.

It's rechargeable with an actually decent run time, has flood, and spotlight modes with low and high. Plus a red light for night vision. And is only $25. The last one I owned I used until the rubber covering the buttons wore away and you could see the circuit board. It's replacement currently has a piece of black duct tape covering the rubber in an attempt to prolong it's lifespan until I can come up with a better idea. Suggestions welcome.
