>>1921197The subreddit from what I've seen is just gear reviews and recommendations, and idk if I'd trust those people.
The UL thing, I love it. I'm a trail runner and also love backpacking and camping, so I'm slowly getting enough gear to fit in some 20-25lt pack and go run/hike on my local mountains, stopping for the night wherever I want.
The downsides are:
>Trading weight for comfort Tent becomes bivvy or hammock or one of those shitty UL tents that aren't too waterproof or need a long time and trekking poles to set up, sleeping bag becomes lighter but less comfy sleeping bag, food becomes either dehydrated shit or energy bars, cookset becomes a UL stove and a can
>Trading weight for reliabilityYou just know that for the same price, a 160g rain jacket is not as good as a 350g rain jacket. Same goes for tent/bivvy/hammock, sleeping bag, stove etc.
>Trading weight for budgetYou can pretty much make a complete backpacking kit with like 100-150$ including the backpack, excluding the food. For UL those might get you just an ok backpack/vest, or just a UL stove, or just a reliable non-coffin bivvy.
Honestly I'm just going with an emergency bivvy + a poncho or UL tarp for shelter, but I need a pack and a sleeping bag + mat.
