im stuck in texas but want to start getting into doing /out/ things.
are there any options for me other than finding someone with enough land that will let me camp/shoot on their property? this state is completely devoid of any BLM land it seems.

specifically anything in the fort hood/killeen/austin area?

Hello fellow central Texas fren, cant suggest anything since im in the same situation as you. Only /out/ place I know is wildflower trail next to I-14 before you get into Belton and I havent been there in ages but it was nice when I was there. Havent been to Belton lake yet but plan to start fishing over there as well

Big Bend and Guadalupe Mountains are the best places in the state to camp and hike. However, they're pretty far from the rest of the state.

They're both worth weekend trips though.

Also, look up Lost Maples, that's closer to San Antonio but it's very nice.

Im making it a habit to visit my friend in Tennessee because of it, its not too bad but could be better. Also I hate the heat so I naturally dislike it

Raft the mighty Brazos to the sea. I believe there are small falls you may have to portage around somewhere a ways south of BCS though.
Or hike the pointless Lonestar Trail, I hear half of it isn't even in subdivisions.

OP also check out Ink's Lake, it's just a state park but still some interesting rock formations to hike around and go swimming.
Does tubing count as /out/? The Guadalupe and Frio are both nice. Out East there's Caddo Lake, go canoe in the cypress and such.

other central texas things that have not been mentioned that are nice are pedernales and colorado bend state parks. the ladybird johnson wildflower center is great if you like flowers.

people have mentioned palo duro, but there is also caprock canyon which is similar but less visited. they also have a 54 mile trailway which has some really nice sections.

for primitive camping or backcountry use, its either flat national forests in east texas, leaving the state for like arkansas, or going to west texas, where i live. guadalupe and big bend (both state and national parks) are great, and there are a bunch of wildlife management areas in the west that are pretty unused outside peak hunting times. you can get your shootin on there. i go to black gap a lot when its not too fucking hot.
