It's nothing dramatic but this is my campsite in the family's back acres. I use it all year round, when I'm town anyway. I love it there, it's a good spot and carries memories all the way back to the 80s when my dad's logging road went through there and I'd stand in the back of the truck while he drove out to harvest trees and back.

I went hiking with a friend in the spring right as corona was shutting everything down. I wasn't all that experienced, but I've been backpacking every month on average now since.

We ended up hiking off trail in the cascades, leading us marching up a snowy mountain which we didn't question for some reason, and once we had gotten to the top of the peak we then realized how we were a few miles off trail. The only ways down were the way we came and down the valley of a glacier which was in the direction of the trail. So we started slowly descending down the glacier and after 5 minutes, the sun started to set, which we had forgotten all about. We ended up racing down a glacier for a few hundred feet, literally running, with no clamps or snowshoes, anything, and made it to the middle of the glacier, on level grounds where rocks made a little island in the glacier and set up our tent the fastest I ever have. I still cannot set up the tent faster than I did that night. Also slept well and woke up to sounds of rushing water beneath me.

i had a similar experience back in my teens, i brought a friend out for an easy campout in the back acres of my family's woods, and it had just rained and was super humid as well. we couldn't get a fire started, until about 9:30pm the silence exploded into a chorus of coyotes howling, all around us - they had us completely encircled. well funny how under those conditions we managed to get the fire lit immediately!

Ayyyy I was just camping there this weekend, it was cold as shit at night but stars were great. Doesn’t really feel like wilderness though because the mountain is surrounded by cities, reminded me of camping on McAfe knob

My last proper campout before lockdowns began and things got weird, alone at the base of Mt Coree, probably a hundred km away from the nearest person. The national park has a compulsory closure when it rains or snows because landslides are common and the roads are awful and wash out and they're sick of trying rescue stranded assholes like me. Anyway I stayed and it got crazy. Once the rain got so heavy I couldn't keep the tarp up anymore so I retreated into the back of the truck. Had my beer, my headphones, candle lantern, cozy as fuck while rain pounded on the roof like a waterfall. I popped my head out every now and then to scope the place out and at one stage there was water about halfway up the tires because the whole area was flooding out. The road was a mud river. Anyway I had such a great night all cozy in the back, and although it was a mess trying to drive out in the morning I made it home.

Being loud
Being super obvious
Lighting huge fires
Shitting up the place
Leaving behind trash
Damaging the local area (axe gouges in trees, knocking over walls, digging big holes)

When it comes to wild camping in the UK, it's very much a case of "only illegal if you get caught". and even if you get caught, it's unlikely anybody cares if you're out-the-way and respectful. If you REALLY want peace and quiet go up the beacons, or head down to Dartmoor.

It was night when I posted, dipshit. Plus I'm by myself. Nothing to do but hang around the fire, drink, and shitpost. Slight break in between legs of a long hike along the crest of the Black Mountains in the Aldo Leopold Wilderness. It was cold for Gila (31F), hence the blanket. Looking at the skeletonized trees was a trip and a half.

I use trains to get about, and yes in many areas (especially along the Wales border, which I'm right next to), there is police presence specifically to stop this stuff. In some areas it's quiet as shit and you can train hop for free though, I know other Brits have been enjoying that.
