Ashamed to admit that I got completely btfo by altitude on elbert today. Still finished but it was a suffer fest and I didn't enjoy it

Yeah I suppose. I've kinda moved on from destination/goal based outings to just doin shit I can enjoy every step of. Would like to avoid this in the future of anyone has anecdotal tips on altitude management aside from. The obvious stuff you can Google

Nice. Do you live in Colorado/at elevation? I was really afraid of Elbert as well because I got super sick once around 9k. To prepare for elbert, I spent 3 days in Silverthorne chillin out just getting acclimated and then I destroyed elbert. Felt fine

I thru hiked the CDT and did Elbert as a side trip, jogged up it in the morning, hiked back down and then did 25 more miles before the day was out. What I'm trying to say is that we can't all be as awesome as I am :)

I'm one of those dirty nomads. Been doing fine at like 10-11k, been all over the rockies and cascades for like 7 weeks. Had been going for runs just fine at 5000, but obviously that's a bigass difference.

the real problem is altitude problems can happen at any time to anyone, regardless of how acclimated they are. being as fit as you can will help, but nothing can really prevent altitude symptoms. just have to be willing to slow down, stop, or even call it if things suddenly get bad

Don't be ashamed anon. Hiking substantial elevations/altitudes is very difficult, and it's endearing that you committed to it.

The picture is gorgeous too. If you've got it in higher resolution you should see if you can get it printed/framed and stick it on a wall.

I started going for hikes in the 9–10k ft range. Haven't noticed any altitude effects. How high up do you need to get for altitude sickness to be a problem?

Half of our group (2 out of 4 people) started getting headaches at ~9500 ft. But keep in mind that we live on sea level. Obviously if you live in the mountains you are more resistant to altitude sickness.
