I don't have a bolt action rifle or shotgun but I have 2 ARs and I don't know if they're good enough for deer, 556 16 inch and 300 BLK 7.5. Would either one do the job or should I buy a bolter? My ARs are for rabbit, coyote, woodchuck and burglar removal, I don't know if they could take down a deer, I also heard elk and moose taste good and they're bigger.
I'm more /out/ than /k/ but I've never hunted in my life.

Those are powerful enough, but bolt action are much more accurate and humane. Definitely research hunting much much more before you go do it, and you should probably start out with a guide or a friend/family member who knows what they are doing. Hunting is definitely worth putting in the time, effort, and money to make sure youre doing it right. Please don't be another lazy fucking asshole who goes out and wounds a deer and let's it run off suffering because you don't know what your doing, it gives the rest of the hunting community a bad name.

Been a .243fag my whole life, so the main thing I would worry about is muzzle velocity, but realistically it doesn't matter nearly as much as where you aim and when you fire. My father got a black bear once with a .243, which is NOT a proper bear cartridge, by shooting out the spine. A bullet is a bullet at the end of the day.

This anon has never hunted, owns no guns, and has no idea what he's talking about. 5.56 is the same size as a .223 which is commonly used for deer, and a 300 blk is just a short version of a 30-06 which is one of the most common deer hunting rounds. It's not a question of the bullet, they are both more than efficient and affective rounds for killing deer. It's a question of the gun you are using, AR's are not made for sharp shooting a deer from 100 yards away, they are made for wounding multiple targets and hopefully killing them, but killing them isn't necessary as long as they are wounded and out of commission. That's not how deer hunting works, you want it to drop and die ASAP so that you can find the deer without tracking it too far and to minimize suffering.

Oh god, not the “made to wound” meme again.
Every AR-15, even the cheapest, will shoot 2.5moa. That’s plenty accurate for deer hunting at <= 150yds. .300 blackout is nowhere near the same as .30-06. It may be the same bullet, but one is going 2400 ft/sec, and the other is going 1100 ft/sec. It all boils down to shot placement and using the proper bullet.

shooting the same weight .30 caliber bullet out of a .300 blackout will lead to drastically different ballistics compared to a .30-06. A .30-06 will always project a bullet with more velocity and energy. It’s really not that complicated.

Completely different ballistics and applications between .30-06 and .300 blk. 123gr .300blk out of 7.5" barrel gets 1850fps at the muzzle, 220gr out of a 7.5" gets 950-1050 fps. If you were going to hunt deer with a 7.5" 300 blk you could do it with the right bullet weights and distances but it's literally retarded to compare it to .30-06, 300 blk is most similar to 7.62x39 being almost identical in ballistics and offered bullet weights across all barrel lengths. OP's 16" 5.56 AR with a good optic and a 60-77gr bullet choice is an all around better choice than the 7.5" blk for deer hunting though, primarily for ergonomics and setting up an accurate shot rather than ballistics.

I was comparing the 2, because they have the same size bullet and the 30-06 is more accurate, meaning that the bullet can be more accurate without changing it's size. You are also saying that the ballistics are different despite the size of the bullet. We are literally agreeing with eachother.

The best source for information is going out with someone with experience. If you don't have a friend or family member to help you, I'd suggest hiring a guide. Mostly, just get a good hunting rifle and start practicing with it a couple days a week. Once you've become competent and familiar with shooting at a range, find a friend,family, or guide to teach you how to hunt. Also read through all your state regulations for deer and whatever else you want to hunt.

This is why no one should talk in absolutes about anything. On average, a bolt gun will shoot more accurate than an auto loader. Of course there’s exceptions. Also, it’s very very difficult to find or build a sub-moa ar-15. People always like to shoot - 3 round group and say their gun is sub-moa because they shot a 1” group once. Unless you can do it 90% of the time, it’s not sub-moa. And they’ll never be sub-Mia without using match ammunition or loading your own.

My point is that there is no comparison between 30-06 and 300 blk beyond the bullet diameter, the same weight bullets fired from either cartridge have completely different ballistics and velocities.

I barely get 2150fps out my 10.5 blk with 110gr, if you consistently want 2000+fps out of pistol length 300 blk you have to shoot lighter bullets. 30-06 on the other hand shoots a bullet twice as heavy 300+fps faster. 220gr out of 300 blk is almost universally subsonic or near subsonic even in 16" barrels. You also don't gain much fps with longer barrels or lose too much fps in shorter barrels in .300 blk which is why people like them in pistol length.

To the OP, after all this bullshit let it be said both your guns are perfectly suitable for deer hunting. If you can hit an area the size of the vitals at the ranges you will be shooting at, then focus on learning about deer behaviour, habitat, legal hunting grounds, your local regulations, and butchery/field dressing. Everyone focuses on the gun but it is all the other shit that makes or breaks a hunt.

Eh, I’d disagree. Leave the .300 blackout at home. Assuming you don’t have a pistol scope mounted on your gun, with a 7.5” barrel, your sight radius is way too short to be hitting accurate shots beyond 40-50 yards, unless you’re very good.

That's just what I brought to my brother's house because we are going out this weekend, I've also got a remington 180, ruger sr 1911 in 10mm, and a mossberg 500 12g with pistol grip, and very happy with that. Everything you posted is mid range at best, but who really gives a shit about the price? It's like the gun equivalent of glamping. I love this gun it's very reliable, sturdy, accurate, comfortable, and frankly looks pretty neat. I've shot a buck and 2 doe since I bought it last year, which is exactly what it's meant to do. What do you even do with all those guns other than pretend to be cool and brag to strangers on the internet? You seem like you have a lot of insecurities you're trying to project on me right now. As a lifetime hunter, I recommend watching Meat Eater, especially starting in the second season he gives some good advice on fishing and hunting. A good quote of his I like is "if you're looking for fish, look in their kitchen" and that's pretty universal for hunting as well.

If you can shoot 1moa unsupported, you are the greatest shooter ever to bless mankind. The x-ring is 7” wide in high power matches (3.5 moa), and it is rare that anyone ever clears it unsupported. This is with purpose-built rifles, shooting jackets, and match ammunition. Even prone with a sling, I’d wager 99% of shooters wouldn’t be able to clear the x-ring.

In my state you get 4 options where I live, shotgun with slugs, bow, muzzleloader, pistol and the legal length of a pistol in the usa is less then 16in barrel so my 14in ar10 in 308 or ar15in 7.62x39 is perfectly fine for the distances I would have to shoot with the other said guns or bows

Yeah, first you have to figure out your state and also how long you can hunt with any particular weapon. You might be able to get out there sooner if you use the muzzleloader over the AR, or a bow over the muzzleloader.

Primitive weapon hunting seems cool but I think I'd need less of a gut to do it.

I should have worded that better. I'm not saying smaller are inherently more accurate, but varmint rounds tend to be higher velocity with a lighter projectile designed to hit a small target that doesn't need a large projectile to kill. Where as the bigger hunting round needs a larger payload to do reasonable damage, this is where legistics comes in you can always make a larger round that would shoot just as flat it just takes more boom like in the case of the 50bmg or 338 lapua,
but pushing a larger slug the same as a smaller slug takes more material in the way of powder and case size, it needs a heavier gun to handle the recoil and to keep the chamber from rupturing, when all its needs to do is hit a plate sized kill zone at a apropriate range. >>1928674 said a larger bullet would be more accurate which is not true at all, and in fact needs a better gun and shooter to have the same accuracy as a smaller caliber.

Any KY deer hunters here? I'm trying to get into deer hunting here, I have the gun and the practice but I'm not gonna be ready to go until probably next year.
