It just depends on what you use to baton. You shouldn’t really try to baton anything bigger than a sapling with a mora for example, even that’s pushing it probably, and if you know your knife is very brittle stainless or high grade stuff, it’s probably risky to baton.
Here’s my advice: just get a beater ass cheapo hunk of metal in whatever size you prefer. I used a grinder to make some very soft weld steel into a knife shaped object and it’s the most useful tool I have because I can wack stuff with it and it will never snap, just bend. Course, the edge retention is godawful but it’s not absent you know?
