so i have to ask, /out/...

is there a good reason NOT to use one of these for catching small game innawoods?

my idea is to fasten a tether to it, so even if the force of the trap doesn't guarantee incapacitation, that it would at least immobilize long enough for me to get there.

is this unethical?

please discuss if i had a great idea, or a douchey one.

i'm gonna go ahead and support OP on his proposition. if you're catching rodents and squirrels and such for food there isn't a great way to kill them anyway, at least not any better than one of these knucklebreakers here.

yeah you could try to shoot them but that takes time and luck you can't spare, and any other trap or snare you can make isn't going t be as reliable, or humane.

the only thing i would have to recommend, between the two traps (rat and mouse) is that you be very careful where you set them.

mice and birds and feast all day off a rat trap without setting it off, and squirrels/chipmunks/bunny wabbits will be maimed but not killed/almost def escape a mouse trap.

also your tether idea is splendid

your kind words about my idea are appreciated. however, i still have to wonder if this is an ethical no-no to other hunters/trappers? i was sadly never brought up with this, so i don't know if that counts as human/ethical or not.

i thought about the size thing too, which is why peanut butter is best bait to me.

a: i can eat it my damn self for the most pound-for-pound nutritional value

b: sticky bait will likely make the trap go off, even if it takes a bit of time

i have no experience hunting but lots of experience with traps (in fact my gif up there is OC)

peanut butter is best, but also if you put some sunflower seeds in it (like little PB/seed meatballs) it's irresistible! just beware birds, they'll lay your traps bare and even if you snap one you can't really eat a sparrow

whoever gives hunting licenses also gives trapping licenses. trapping without a license is generally a very serious misdemeanor or felony. in my state, the warden can impound your vehicle and all your gear if they catch you trapping without a license or out of season.

Place a branch diagonally against a tree, tether the rat trap to the tree, with about a foot of thin, strong wire or fishing line, then place it on top of the branch. When the tree-rat sets it off, it should fall down and hang it there, preventing it from escaping.

They're pretty loud, maybe chill somewhere nearby and hop to when you hear it snap? might help with your conscience if you feel it's unethical.

many creatures aren't protected under hunting/trapping laws though... depending on state

many rodents and other vermin (including some types of rabbits, hares, squirrels, racoons, etc) may be classified as pests and can be kilt all year round at will.

sadly they're usually the ones that are none too good eatin'

Rat traps are kill traps they will kill as large as a big squirrel pretty easily. Tons of people use them in weasel boxes so I don't think it will shock or appall people to see them used in what you are making sound like a survival at least theory situation.

Are you trying to get into fur trapping? Or is this just a thing to do while camping? I can give more information on simple and easy to set traps if you are trying to get into fur.

I'm about to sound country as fuck but coon, squirrel, and groundhogs are super tasty. I've tried at least some of every species I have killed/trapped. Even fox isn't bad if you get at the meat before the smell sets in.

Rabbit, squirrel, raccoon, opossum and Fox all have seasons and limits.

Squirrel and Rabbit are delicious if you know how to cook. Spent most of my younger years hunting them. Sadly i never learned how to properly tan a hide and the last squirrel i shot was the only one i managed to tan well and the dog ended up getting it and tearing it up.

The spring on a 110 which is the small one is a good bit stronger than a rat trap. They are also placed differently. Like a rat trap you can set a conibear with some bait behind it. People do this with a bucket with like a 220 for raccoon and stuff of that size. You can also set them on trails both on land and under water I've seen people catch fish with them. The idea with a rat trap is to have the animal manipulate the pan and engage the trap to get at some bait. With a conibear the animal just has to move through the trap and should set it off.

Conibear or cheap victor jumps are the best.
I use #1 jumps on rats all the time and there dead 90% of the time of i check them.
Its illegall where i live but #13 jumps with the teeth are the best traps ive ever used, ive held 50 pound beaver in them before with no damage while ive had more chewouts and bleeding foots from rubber traps.
>TFW rubber traps are the only traps legal and id rather risk a fine than have animals suffer frostbite and chewing there own toes off.

Im 38 and have been trapping my whole life.
I would like to talk to some fellow trappers and also debate the ethical aspects of it also.
Keep an eye out for that and ill tell of some of ways of catching critters i learned from the oldtimers.

I'd imagine the risk of using mouse/rat traps is it might damage the internal organs of smaller game, depending on where it snapped closed on them, which could ruin the meat.

i.e. if it snapped closed over the stomach area it could rupture the stomach or intestines.
