im pretty partial to AA flashlights myself, since carrying a couple backup AAs is stupid easy
however you can get an incredible beam out of a CR123 (tad pricier per battery) or rechargeable 18650 lithium.
good ways to protect yourself are going to be carrying yourself / walking in a manner that you dont look like an easy target, martial arts training (recommend wing chun, don't fall for those fancy show martial arts like akido), if you can get a concealed carry firearm do that, otherwise pepper spray and a knife are very effective if you know what youre doing
the main way to stay safe is having situational awareness, the more youre outdoors the more your senses will be enhanced and shit wont surprise you as much
