I have no idea where you are going, but if you're going somewhere with snow, using skis is probably better than walking in the snow.
You need to be able to bury yourself. You need a shovel that can dig in hard packed snow without breaking.
Don't take risks. If the weather turns bad, don't force yourself to keep walking. Tons of people have died that way.
Avoid going where there can be snowslides. Don't bet on "it'll probably be okay" or think you can outrun it. And equipment to help people find you doesn't make you safer, you're quite likely to be dead even before the snowslide's over and people can begin searching, if there's even anyone nearby.
