OP here. Sorry if this is the wrong board, I didn’t think that /k would be helpful. I’ve never been hunting before but I’ve seen lots of small game on my ranch in Louisiana. I’m also going on a business trip to Anchorage soon so I’d like something that would work up there as well.

best small game gun is an 20ga/22lr over under
20 ga for birds on fly and 22lr for stationary game

I hunt ptarmigan/grouse with a S&W Governor shooting federal 4 shot defense loads. They're up high so it's easier to carry than a 10/22 or shotgun.

Where are you from?.

Airguns are the best for the UK (and i'de suspect a lot of the rest of the non free world) because they're fairly unrestricted.
In the US a .410 shotgun or 12gauge would be the best entry level option, maybe a .30 or .25 cal airgun as well

Check your state laws.
Depending on the type of bird it is probably illegal to shoot it with a rifle.

I know its illegal to shoot any migratory bird with a rifle.
