Are flare guns worth buying and carrying?
What kind of emergency equipment does /out/ bring?

Not unless you're at sea. A personal locator beacon or satellite messaging device will serve you better innawoods.

I have an InReach for emergencies, a whistle to make noise for people close by to hear me, and a reflective space blanket. If I'm out overnight I obviously have a sleeping bag, tent etc I can hunker down in plus a small medkit (2 doses eyewash, 4 doses ibuprofen, 1 sterile pad, some Compeeds, 2 doses wound cleaner and some medical tape).

I used to buy "expired" rocket parachute distress flares at the gun show, see picrelated for example of similar product. Commercial boats have to replace theirs every few years even though they're still perfectly fine. I used to fire them off occasionally for fun and never had one fail.

Be warned, DO NOT hold them in your hand while firing, no matter what the instructions tell you. The rocket backwash literally tore my skin loose all across my palm the first time I fired one. Set it against a rock or a railing or something before you smash the firing toggle. Goggles are a good idea, or at least turn your head away so that your eyeballs don't get shredded.

All the rest is up for debate. Whistle is built into my firestarter. Space blanket weighs almost nothing. Medkit size is personal choice, and I could leave it at home. So far I've never had to use it. I've tried to rein in the What Ifs - you won't splint a broken leg and walk out, or suture a thigh gash. But nicks, cuts, scrapes and blisters can be more worrisome /out/ where your hands are dirty and soap is not abundant.

I mean you could make a small one but it would technically be either an SBS or an AOW. There are plenty of other DIY pistol designs or partially DIY designs out there that avoid that though. Also even the 22lr adapter insert in a plastic frame flare gun doesn't work very well and is prone to failure within 100rds.

Before 1900 a lot of cartridges used BP (45lc, 38, 22lr, 12ga etc), BP firearms are mostly unregulated in the US (and even some European countries) and assuming they would be eventually it is relatively simple to make BP at home with ingredients from a farm or hardware store and your own ammo from raw lead. Some or all of the above depending how innawoods I'm going. I also have non-emergency kit that can be used in an emergency, a bivvy, walking poles if I do in an ankle.

I've never had to use any of it in an emergency, but I've got friends who have.
