Is the goretex pro still the king of waterproof shells or are there any newer and better technology?

It absolutely is. A nice high denier gorepro hardshell is second to none. Feels like wearing armor. It's highly waterproof but it's also substantially more breathable than other gore membranes.

Goretech Pro is expensive when you get it in any item, but it is still the best. The breathability aspect is not important because anything made with it should have zippers that you can open for ventilation. This is usually the pockets on a jacket, and on pants down the sides of the legs. Arc Teryx and Patagonia make the best shells imo

I have a 50€ decthlaon rain coat, thatt kept a pack of cigarettes bone dry in an external chest pocket,over 4 hours walking in an absolute hellshow of rain and wind, during Cynthia storm.
I'm not saying gore-tex is bad, but there are a bazillion cheaper options that do a perfect job.

I thought goretex was a meme until I copped a Arc'teryx Beta LT For $120. Even without pit zips, this thing breathes ridiculously well. I can stand in 100 mph wind and not feel any of it or in a downpour and be fine.

Only thing that sucks is constantly having to take care of the DWR to make sure it doesn't wet out.
