Can any outist recommend a good DSLR setup?

It is probably time to upgrade my kit entirely. I have a sony alpha with the kit lens and a 55-300mm zoom. It served me well and was a great camera but I really need a better lens.. Would be great if I could keep using the camera body, but I know that will limit my lens choices.

I am looking for something that I can carry with me backpacking, and usually I carry my camera in a camera bag w/ lenses.

Any suggestions anons?

How will using a Sony limit your lens choices? Sony controls a huge portion of the market right now and has plenty of third party support, something I envy as a Fuji shooter.

I'd recommend checking out upgraded kit lenses. Fuji has a 16-55mm kit lens alternative with max aperture f2.8 at all focal lengths. I'd be surprised if the Alpha line didn't have something similar. If not, consider getting a prime lens or two at common focal lengths. Most mid-length mirrorless prime lenses are pretty compact, but look into pancakes for your camera if you're really concerned about backpack space.

If you're considering the jump from crop to full frame (A6000 to A7*), just remember (1) full frame weighs more, (2) full frame lenses cost more, and (3) crop is debatably better for wildlife, if that's what you're into.

I've got a Lumix S1R and it's great.
Lenses are great. Should really have got the S1 for better low light.
Pretty big and heavy, but not really significantly more than a similar camera.
Would post pics but lost the lot from S1 during an update the other day ffs
Cloud backup worked for older stuff, but lost everything recent.

Don’t go mirrorless if you’re going on extended hikes or you will need to bring a ton of extra batteries. Mirrorless cameras suck up way more power than a DSLR.

WAY more.
My old DSLR lasted forever on a battery, I don't think I even got in danger of it going flat.
New mirrorless won't go a day on one battery, and it's not like I'm taking hundreds of pics.

I'm curious why you think Sony will limit your lens choice though? Lens choice wasn't my number one priority, but when I looked it didn't seem like I'd be short on options.

That's it. You already have lenses that cover everything but the extremes and you should have learned where you want to go next. If you didn't you will just be throwing money out.

this i was doubting between 80D and M50 for a long time and I'm really happy with my mirrorless M50, the battery last long enough for more than a day easily (ofcourse not continuous shooting) and just incase I carry a spare one on longer trips. The weight and packability of a mirror less just make it so much more comfy to bring along. I had a dslr before this btw

the Canon Powershot series are really good and also the Ricoh WR cameras are made for out. Good price, totally freeze and water proof, proper optical zoom and other neat-o features and much better quality and form factor than just using your phone camera. If you know a bit about photography and properly utilizing your exposure triangle you'll get way more out a proper camera than with a phone, and have a lot more fun doing it.

I've used the 5D mark IV. Its actually good, not suitable for a casual outdoorser.

Also used the 6D, it's fucking shit. Nikon is better both low and high end.

Either get a rugged one if you're mudscum or a climber or a high end point and shoot like the Sony RX100 or better yet Canon G7X or G5X if you're not constantly getting wet.

I’m contemplating picking up /out/ photography just as a fun hobby, looking at getting my first camera pretty soon. Any suggestions for website that break down the basics or what to look for? Live in Eastern WA and it’s amazing country, and I’ve been hiking and snowshoeing a lot over the past few years. -image stabilizers help reduce blur on the images caused by camera shake during long exposure times, this is especially useful with telephoto lenses if you're gonna shoot animals at a distance. stabilizers are rated in "steps", i.e. 6.5 steps, with higher numbers being better (each increase of 1 means twice as effective stabilizing)
-some cameras are "weather proof" aka water and dust resistant (but not actually proof), adds some safety if you want to use it in rain
-beginner cameras I think tend to be plastic bodies, while enthusiast models tend to be magnesium, more solid
-enthusiast models tend to have more control buttons and be more customizable, compared to beginner models, making them easier in use
-consider if you care about 4K video or not
-if you intend to shoot animals in motion, then continous autofocus and burst rate is important. for landscapes this doesn't matter.
-good iso performance (lowlight performance) matter if you're gonna shoot after sunset, or in a forest with thick foliage blocking the sun

basically there's a load of stuff to think about, as a beginner who doesn't know what you want I'd say don't buy the cheapest cameras, as I don't think these are as enjoyable in use, but don't pay a lot for the camera either. buying used, or something that has been on the market for some time, is probably the smartest option to just test the waters. also, a proper lens is just as important as the camera body (you don't have to think so much about sharpness unless you're gonna make large prints like some pro, but the maximum aperture is important)

I'm just gonna mention my own camera, the panasonic lumix g80. pretty nice camera for outdoors use apart from a battery that drains fast when it's cold. the viewfinder could also have been a bit bigger. the lens that comes with the camera has a very nice zoom range.

Depends what you want to shoot.
(Not being a douchebag here, was rearranging my bag)
Everything is a compromise unfortunately.
I’ve ended up with L-R:
1. One for whitewater/beach/boating etc. bulletproof. JPEG only.
2. Daily pocket cam. Basically a baby mirrorless. Not water or bump resistant.
Does everything pretty well. Not cheap for small camera, all metal. Love it.
3. Sports camera. Not bump or water resistant. Bloody good continuous AF, use it for motocross, downhill etc. it’s old, shit in low light, but still really good at daytime action. Lots of cheap lenses.
Don’t care if I break it. Plastic.
4. Landscape (what I prefer to do. )
Fucking amazing pics. Financial burden, fear of loss or damage. Could buy a very good used car in place of a new lens.
Weather/dust sealed. Big n heavy but sturdy. Slow AF but update this month should fix it a bit. Can do 12/14/47/187MP. 187 on tripod though, and better be worth it because it’ll grind your computer to a halt processing it.
Only 6fps RAW, but 30 (?) in 6K JPEG.
“Hey stand over there and- Shit, I’ve gotta change battery.” (Exaggeration)
What would I choose if I only had one? Honestly hard to say. Either daily or destination.

Also if you get a good compact, “no filters” is a myth. There are various adapters available. I always shoot around water, so have a CPL on all my lenses.
(Except the waterproof one. My young son has kind of adopted it, and he’d fuck it in 5min)

Keeping the same body:
The old Minolta 70-210mm f/4 is pretty good. That could be had cheap. A Tamron 70-200mm f/2.8 is excellent, though very large. Combined with a fast 30/35mm-ish lens and you'd be set.

If you wanted to reduce size you could go for an Olympus or Panasonic mirrorless and get a lens like the Panasonic 35-100mm f/2.8 for a comparable setup, only much smaller and lighter.

Choosing a smaller body keep in mind that your hand size. For those with large hands the ergonomics of something tiny like an Olympus E-M5 can make it a pain to use, especially compared to a full-sized SLR.

After hefting a larger setup like the one above for a long time switching a smaller mirrorless setup is such a relief. Those fewer pounds make a big difference after so many hours.

The batteries you carry make up for the weight lost from a dslr though in fairness.. I get about 5 chargers straight using my anker power bank on my Sony s7ii.

I do agree the batteries are trash but carrying extra isn't entirely a problem

Although not as good as genuine Sony ones the wasabi knock offs cost 1/10th the price for a pack of two last I checked. a6000 costs $350-$450 used from KEH
pick up a $70 neewer 35mm/1.7 lens that thing is indesctructable and works great, will also teach you a lot about photography since it's a manual only lens

Go read any number of reviews of Leica version vs. Panasonic version, and 100% of what I've read - which is quite a bit - say basically "get the cheaper one, it's the same if not better, without a red badge".

Hauling 5 to 10kgs in camera equipment is a total ballache.

Mobile phones continue to get better everyday and AI stands to transform photography in the next decade.

5d MK3 here and I never use it when I'm out adventuring on my motorcycle. All it does is make me paranoid about my shit getting knicked which makes me haul another 20kgs in hard luggage.

Hey OP, nature photographer here.

There are literally dozens of setups that your could have, and which one you need depends on what you are planning on doing with the camera.
Are you taking pictures of wildlife? You will need a telephoto lens.
Will you take landscape pictures? You will need a wide angle lens.
Pictures of insects and small critters? Macro lens.
People? Pretty much any prime lens will do.

Brand doesn't matter unless you are a fanboy, and sensor size doesn't matter if you are not going pro, but if you want an all-rounder lens that will do pretty much anything with okay quality go for the Tamron AF 18-200mm or any equivalent for Sony. It will do wide angle, portrait/general photos and telephoto. Of course the overall quality won't be as good as having 3 specialized lens, but you will be carrying less stuff and it doesn't really matter if you are just taking pics for fun.

I use a Nikon D800e which is great. Any Canon or Nikon above entry level from the last few years will do just fine for you.

Pentax is good for weather sealing all of their cameras but I don't know if they have been keeping up really.

for mirrorless (lighter than a DSLR)
Sony is just a spec whore system
Fuji could be a good light weight system but only APSc or if you have enough money the 50mp MF system is fucking fantastic!
m4/3s is just good for video at this point
I don't know how good the Canon and Nikon offerings are in mirrorless but I would say they are probably better than the Sony at this point.

YES Pentax exists and they're the bees tits! I was in my local camera shop one day with my Pentax and the guy who runs the place spotted it and told me it's the most underrated digital camera on the market. He was a tech at Nikon for 25 years and he said the day he retired he bought himself a K-50 and never looked back.

They're amazing cameras in all depts (except maybe video but lolvideo). My brother initially tried to dissuade me from Pentax saying "you won't have as many options for glass as you do with Canon" but fuck, there are wwwway more Pentax and Pentax-compatible lenses out there than I would ever want or need.
