What are your thoughts on living /out/ of a car as a permanent lifestyle? Do we have any veterans here?

It seems to be the most efficient way to financial independence (not having to work) other than "house hacking" with loans.

I've slept in my car multiple times and it wasn't that bad. Even if it's below freezing you can just bundle up and use hot water bottles.

I did this for two winters in Grande Prairie, Alberta. I was doing hot passes with a company rig, some shut down work and alot of pilings. The money was great, but I was working 12 hours a day freezing my toes off. I own a home 8 hours away and I didnt see the point in renting a place just to sleep.
So I said fuck it and on my days off I set up my truck to live in. I have a 2014 F150 4x4 SuperCrew Long box with a high top canopy.
The first winter was very cold. Cold enough that jobs got cancelled and equipment wouldn't start. Minus 40 overnight lows kinda thing. I slept in
the back cab and always kept the rear seat in the upright position and packed foam and pillows on the floor. I have a proper winter sleeping bag and several heavy blankets. I never climbed into the back unless I knew I was going to be in there for awhile. Mainly because I parked in different hotel/ motel parking lots for the night to borrow electricity to run my block heater and power my phone and small 400 watt heater that I used to keep it a comfy temperature inside. I had a stealthy extension cord that ran from my front bumper under my hood into the corner of my door to the heater that blew hot air under the front seat towards my face. I never got a visit from the police, but once this Karen looking bitch came and wrote down my license plate.
I read somewhere that the moisture you exhale overnight can be measured in litres or quarts. I dunno if that's true but moisture build up was definitely a problem. I had command start so in the morning from inside my bag I would get the dash fan started on thawing out the frost inside.
Showering was easy. You can sign up at any bulk station for a free fuel card and get access to the card lock showers. You need good credit though. Gyms are an option but cost shekels.
Piss bottles and hot water bottles help.
Food storage and cooking is out the window.
Anything you keep where you sleep is going to get damp so put it somewhere else.

Oh yeah, boredom gets to be a real problem. The times I wasn't parked at my sleeping spot I was parked outside Walmart, McDicks etc. getting WiFi instead of using up my data. I had a portable DVD player and 3DS for bing bing wahoo.
Be very careful living in a vehicle full time. I did it temporarily for a few months at a time and had multiple street people/ crack heads try and break in.
It was stressful to wake up to but funny later on remembering their skinny asses running away when you hit the panic button on the Fob.
It was very hard to sleep sometimes with all the city noise, but it was a means to an end. It was insane how much money I saved living in my truck. It sucked ass but now I'm completely off grid on 40 acres and work for myself when I want.
Anyone who does this fulltime is hard as fuck or mentally ill.

Its not as fun as it looks. I only ever did it for a couple months at a time on long nomadic hiking trips. That's about as much of it as I can handle anything more than doing it as a means to travel and see cool stuff it gets pretty uncomfortable real quick

Thanks for the info. I've actually been planning to live in my Toyota Tundra for the past year and i just lost my job and rent is getting tight.

How would you guys recommend going about the food situation? I'm looking into buying a fridge but i also think im gonna need another battery. Any experience doing electrical on your cars?

I've seen truck campers in the national forest, most are alright, some are rouges that rob other campers. There are also those fortunate enough to have a sprinter van conversation and travel the country. At some point I'm going completely off grid, I haven't decided if I'm going to truck camp or trade my truck for an RV and get an dual sport. An RV hookup is anywhere from $20 to $40 a night. An uncle Ted shack is another option. Anyone know anything about tent cities?

Do it if it supports your goals. I originally did it to go skiing and to save on rent. Then I started driving a truck and eventually bought one to save money and essentially turn my living expenses into a tax deduction. Five years later, it got really old never having a sense of being home. So I paid cash for a house and car, started a local business and I live comfortably and "normal" now.

I've been in and out of vehicles for the last 5 years, the majority of that time living in them. Started in a minivan, then a cargo van, now a 4wd pickup with a shell. I've fallen into a pattern of working in the spring and summer months and not in the late fall and winter. I don't make much per year, but it doesn't bother me. I don't have much of a safety net, but I am a generally healthy person and take care of myself. When I started out in the minivan I did a lot of Walmart/rest stop/truck stop overnights and spent most of my time in/on or close by cities and interstates. Now I'm decent at finding BLM/NF land or otherwise off-the-beaten track places to camp. I usually spend 4 - 8 days in one place, before I feel like moving again. The 'lifestyle' requires some street smarts and a lot of self sufficiency. If you're the type to get bored easily or can't sit with yourself you ain't gonna make it.

Like the anon above said, this isn't a long-term situation. Working seasonally works for me at the moment, but it won't forever.

Lived out of my 'yote matrix for around 40 days in summer/fall a few years back. Mainly around the west coast and western states on a long meandering road trip. I was comfy. Coldest it ever got was down to 11F right before I started work at a ski resort in ID but I was fine with a summer sleeping bag, foam pad, and warm clothes. My daily diet was usually something like a banana with peanut butter plus berries for breakfast, a fuckhuge meal from a restaurant for dinner, and an avocado, jerky, and a few handfuls of spinach a few hours before bed. Tried to stay away from canned food and shit like MREs. Never had any issues getting roused outside of parks and campgrounds. Hotel lots are great because they have random cars staying overnight all the time, walmart lots are ok in a pinch but are very hit or miss, even stayed in a hospital parking garage one night lol.

For showers I would either pay the ~$2 for one at a campground or ymca or just tailgate someone into a gym. But the real gem I figured out is that anyt*me f*tness is franchise based, not a national chain. This means you don't even need to make a burner email to sign up for a one week free trial. You go in, show them the email, listen and nod while they show you around, then go back to your car to get your shower supplies and do your thing. The longest I went without a shower for the whole trip was two days. Of course this is no longer the case due to covid so showers might be tough to figure out.

It was nice, looking at any retail business in any small town knowing I could just stop, get a job, and set up shop. I think I could do it long term, but after a while I think I'd need to upgrade to a van or truck for space.

Truck stops are another option for showers. The larger chains are generally cleaner. Never saw a hooker at one :-/
