Is White Sands National Monument worth checking out in New Mexico? I am driving East and am considering altering my route to take a look at this. Any tips? I know it's just a bunch of sand but I am interested in doing some quick photography so if you guys have any tips for the best parts of the monument to check out I would love to hear it. I only have about an hour to kill there

Haven't been there but researched a bit when I was working in San Antonio for a while.

I recommend making it a trifecta and hitting up White Sands, Big Bend, and Guadeloupe National Parks all in one go.

I mean. Texas and New Mexico fucking suck so there's nothing else worth seeing there lol.

It's the newest National Park now, but honestly there's not a lot to see. Both Lincoln National Forest and the Organ Mountains National Monument are less than an hour away from White Sands and much more worthwhile trips. The Organs in particular are stunningly beautiful during the fall.

I lived in LC for a while and I loved visiting white sands. It's not outstanding when you're on the road or still in sight of the dunes where everyone's sledding but if you take the alkali flat trail or go "off trail" out a few miles into the dunes it's really sweet. Nothing but rolling, cool, white dunes, blue skies and mountains on the horizon. Just bring plenty of water and a hat and don't die like those frenchies did a few years ago

Also the Organs are absolutely worth seeing like this anon said, particularly the eastern side / aguirre springs. Dripping springs on the west side is overrated.

Lincoln isn't anything special if you've ever been to the mountains but it's very pleasant considering the area

Was there last week. It's actually pretty cool, softest sand I've ever felt. Fun to just walk off into the dunes and find a quiet spot. I'd go back to camp there once they open that part up. It's pretty expensive though, $25 entrance fee. Buy the national park pass.

Organ's are sweet, pretty unknown spot. I climbed to the organ needle; wasn't expecting how hard that was. I think it was the hardest hike I've ever done.

In order to get to the summit of the Organ Needle, there's some rock climbing approaching the summit. Park Rangers (I assume) will sometimes leave an anchored rope near the top. Although to be honest, it seems that it's just there to you feel better about the climb if you aren’t confident. It's not a hard climb at all, but there's a high likelihood you will die if you fuck up. It's a beginner's level climb with expert level consequences.

I just went there OP, I'd been 2 other times when I was a teenager. It was actually better than I remembered. I'm too lazy to attach a pic but it was really beautiful at sunset.

Like others said, it's nice to hike out into the dunes where you can't see anyone. It's also cool to fly a kite. It's definitely not a great place to get a strenuous, all-day hike in, but there are a lot of places nearby to do that anyway.

When I went, there was plenty of space to get away from the tourists. Drive to the end of the loop, find a parking spot, and just start walking out.

I wouldn't go in the summer though.

Yea, used the rope to climb up and repel back down. The repel was scarier and had worse consequences for fucking up.

Once I made it up past the big orange rocks, I was having to catch my breath ever minute for the entire way up. It's more of a scramble than it is a hike. Also, there isn't much of a trail, so you need to be good a route finding. If you park at the visitors center you're limited to getting up and back down during their open hours which was just enough time for me. There were only two other groups there when I did it, and only a few people made it all the way. Don't look like a pussy and scoot down the mountain on your ass. Yea, it's really steep but you won't make it down in time and you look like a bitch.

I recommend White Sands for a day. It's perfect if you know how to navigate yourself and decide to just stray from the trails and wander the endless white expanse. It's a once in a lifetime experience, even if it's really only worth doing at most a few times
I like it a lot but having lived in the area before I will admit that it's not nearly as good as other nearby spots like the Guadalupes+Carlsbad (A Favorite of mine, I highly recommend the Yucca Canyon trail in Carlsbad Caverns all the way down to the valley for some pure empty wilderness that you wont see another soul in) The Organs (Organ Peak and Baylor peak are my favorite views) LNF (Alamo Canyon is great and you can find tons of agates in the washes) and GNF
Though since I just remembered you only have an hour, you really can't get the full experience of any of these places. It's an area that really takes a time investment to get the good stuff. If I were to only have an hour though, White Sands would be it just to throw myself off of white sand dunes for an hour.

I've traveled across the entire fucking country except Alaska and I've never had hikes as hard as the Organs. It's not just the needle. Organ Peak is rough, the rabbit ears too. Only Baylor Canyon is easy and even then if you want to get yo Baylor Peak it's sketchy. Not as had as the rest but too much silt and I always got stabbed by cactus.

Lol I’m glad I didn’t know how hard it was until after I did it, ignorance is bliss. Every fucking plant out there has thorns, I got stabbed at least 3 times. And that goddamn canyon of trees just before the top. I thought people on alltrails were just being pussies but this is not a casual walk in the woods. It’s probably the steepest grade you can do and still call it a hike. Vertical climbs like this are extremely deceptive because everything looks pretty close but it so much further than it looks. I won’t want to do this hike again until I forget how hard it was.

Back when I lived in the area I generally only went there once in a while once I felt cravings for those views strong enough to make me forget the despair of getting to and from them. Hell, half the trails are so overgrown/are basically deerpaths with thorns waiting to make you bleed. But man each one has been some of the most memorable shit.
