>>196008After a trucker gave us a hike, we reached Santa Elena de Uairen, bought a map, refueled on food and got a good night of sleep. The other day we headed by foot through the Venezuela Highway just as planned, maybe going some 10 or 12 kilometers northwards. A final check on gear and supplies, a couple of agreements and warnings between ourselves and into the jungle we went. All of us had individual survival gear:compass, knives, suplies, first aid, firemaking tools, clothes etc.
Moving straight west, we walked for 3-4 hours, way after we couldn't hear the road noises anymore. That put us some 4-7 kilometers inside the reserve, i suppose. We went talking and making noise to warn any animals or people around that we were there. The jungle was awesome: damp, cool, full of life like nowhere else and also very dense, so you couldn't hear or see anything past 15 meters.
Once we reached a clear spot near a stream, we stretched our tents and hammocks, unpacked a few things, made some fire(a real chalenge, since there is very little dry stuff laying around) and started cooking. After some rice, salami, lentils with cheese and kool aid, we surveyed our supplies and estimated there was food for 4 or 5 days, if we needed or felt like staying some more.
The first night was hell. Amazonian forests are LOUD AS FUCK at night during the 'dry' season, since many birds, amphibians and insects are on mating period, so none of us could sleep well, there was a fuckton of insects that somehow got past the bug net, and I was somewhat concerned that the Venezuelan might try something on us, although i had no real reason to think that.
