My current project is trying to plan a hike to the greenland gap nature preserve near Romney, West Virginia.

There is a trail to the top of the cliffs, but where exactly it starts is unclear, and it hasn't been maintained in some time. I am in touch with the nature conservancy, dunno if anyone has had experience here with them, its like charitably owned land that you can hike on but the trail maint. situation is questionable in many cases.

I got sent a bunch of files like .dbf, .shp, .shx

that I am not sure how to open. I think I need some sort of gis-type software and I am wondering if maybe Gaia or Caltopo could help (gaia subscription seems cheaper).

The guy at the nature conservancy said the trail was popular in the 1950's and 60s and hasn't been maintained in about 20 years, though they did apply paint or plastic markers (he can't remember which) on the trees in the fall of 2008.

I like finding trails that are a bit lesser known but still can provide nice views or access to nice forested areas and bodies of water.

This is supposed to be a hike to a nice view, but the topo map shows the northeastern access along a jeep trail that starts on private land.

I am wondering if maybe it would be worth it to contact the local landowner and ask if I could park there for $$ if that would minimize hiking distance somehow.

Anyways do any of you ever do very planning/logistical intensive hiking?

So apparently in this photo, where the trail is is along those steep talus sloped cliffs to the left in the photo but over the top of that ridgeline and the trail goes up the far side of the hill because that NE trail is better maintained and easier to follow sez nature conservancy.

this is the topo map in caltopo so you can see what I mean about the jeep trail.

He suggested the parking for the NE trail was at:

gps-wise and you ford north fork patterson creek to access it.

On the off chance anyone has HEARD of this trail any info you have or help you could provide would be much appreciated.

Nature conservancy said there are "trails" not really maintained much in a long time up both sides of both the northern and southern cliffs (as you can see on the map as those steep semicircles) but the southern cliffs involve more scrambling.

managed to shove the .dbf, .shp, and .shx file into an online file format converter (into .gpx) and make this alltrails track so now I know where the trail is, only question is where the view is as a waypoint along the trail

at least I have a sense of the mileage and elevation gain now

Hiking 1000 ft of elevation gain is a lot for me.

Anyone that tells you "You're gonna get shot" is larping. No one cares that you're walking through the woods, if you look like a hiker or have a fancy camera. It's only a problem if you're poaching (look like a hunter) or you're creeping around someone's house

these trails tend to be pretty wild and unmaintained and it takes a lot longer than you would think to go places and what the gpx says is the distance tends to underestimate it in my experience

isn't the hiking trails, although it looks like from the map files I was sent the jeep trail does maybe connect to the hiking trail at the top but the parking for the jeep trail would be on private land. Jeep trail really just means doubletrack (wide enough for a vehicle) and not necessarily any indication of suitability in a vehicle especially considering these maps are based off of early 1990s surveying data

anyways does anyone else run into these logistical puzzles when planning hikes? WV doesn't really uh maintain the local trails except like the most popular ones and the boardwalks/family trails.

The high peak is little frog mountain, I was on the side of chestnut mountian. rock creek trail goes up the east side of little frog, it makes the blood mountain trail on the AT look like a joke. It crosses a 46 mile non stop section of the benton McKay also. There are also mountain bike trails that if you run off of you die, I'll get some cliff pics my next time out. Middle of nowhere SE Tennessee NE Georgia and SW North Carolina.

Damn, I'm going to have to visit. We've got atleast 60 miles of mtb trails within 20 miles here, mostly single track and coverd with roots. I rode one a few weeks ago on blue ridge lake that is off camber to a drop-off almost entirely. I held on to the bars so tight I couldn't feel my arms anymore, I hate to admit, but that's the furthest I've ever pushed my bike. A few months back I ate it on a trail next to a river, did a front flip off an embankment 20' down into the rocks. I don't know how I didn't break anything. I wish I knew where my gopro was.

I don't mountain bike much myself but I have been meaning to explore this backcountry area called Tea Creek.

Wilderness means you can't mountain bike (obviously) so the adjacent and semi-popular Cranberry Wilderness (that more people have heard of I think) is off-limits for that but Tea Creek there's a loop with Tea Creek trail, Right Fork Tea Creek Trail, and Tea Creek Mountain trail I think that people do on a mountain bike.

I want to do a shorter loop, hiking, with the north fork trail replacing the right fork tea creek trail as the connector trail, but apparently that's in much worse condition and not mountain bike-able.

less crowded than north fork and maybe easier to ride as it is less dry (north fork mountain trail is in the rainshadow of spruce mountain, the highest part of the allegheny front in the mid atlantic)

the issue is more having to bend down to clear roots (and my lower back), I assume these trails (which are poorly maintained but in scenically beautiful area) need to be fully re-graded in some sections. I'm not sure what the process is but I'd imagine on steeper slopes it is very hard work.

well it needs it, some of them are badly eroded and see little use because they are so poorly maintained

Especially with the more poorly maintained trails I tend to fine, there's very few other people on the trails and parking is rarely an issue. We also try to leave early. Often we are the only NON pickup truck in the parking area.

This in terms of MD/PA/WV/VA appalachian/allegheny hiking.

Also, we try to avoid hiking any remotely popular trails on weekends. Those are a zoo (harpers ferry maryland heights, old rag).

I find it interesting how great smoky mountains national park is by far the most visited park but then you go a little further north into the national forests here and there aren't too many people.

National forest usually means much less easy/family trails vs a national park which sometimes can have shuttle buses and more development.

Yes! Coordinates are the best way to hike.

I had to CALL the nature conservancy to get these coordinates for the Greenland Gap cliffs hike I want to do. Zero online information about where the trailhead is. Guy said it hasn't been a popular hike since the 50s and 60s when dolly sods, seneca rocks, and spruce knob got more developed.

Yeah that's always nice. I wish I had some coordinates for trails closer to me in GWNF or MNF but hey, I think others will appreciate your contributions as well.

All you need to hike is a .gpx file really.

I do have a Garmin but I find it easier to load a .gpx file into Alltrails and create a custom map to have while I hike on my phone. That was I also have the base topo and whatever other layers I want downloaded and can see where I am on the topo in real time on my phone.

Google maps what format? A lot of formats have online website-based file converters that are pretty simple to use.

I'm checking out alltrails now, I've been using trail forks, I don't carry my GPS while mountain biking. It was a while back, if I recall correctly I downloaded a Google earth trail and topo overlay that you could supposedly export a .gpx from, I couldn't get it to work.

You should be able to do create a map and then upload a .gpx file to overlay a red line onto the trail. Not every trail is pre-loaded into alltrails.

Especially if it is not very popular.

I am usually using the alltrails website to create maps, then you can use your phone to view them while out. You can add them to lists.

Going to be rough, I've only been doing day hikes latley, going to empty my pack and start over, it was 45lbs without water last I checked. The only way there is 20 miles up a dirt road, literal middle of nowhere. Looks like I'll be doing it alone.

Ever tried the Moore Run trail? Its the only one to spit you into the middle of otter creek wilderness straight from a road without having to hike over a mountain.

Currently living in Celo, NC, couple minutes from Mt Mitchell. Some of the best trails I’ve ever hiked are right down the road.

I just crossed the creek to get to that sign because you cannot see it from the road. I didn't attempt to climb the cliffs this time. I just wanted to see what condition the trail was in first. The trail was basically gone, as far as I could tell. I might come back when the weather is warmer.

I went up an unmarked trail two weeks ago, it was steep but not dangerous. It went a mile and a half up the side of little frog mountain in Cherokee National forest, over grown as hell and I didn't have a machete. At the end of the somewhat definable trail there was a rock on either side, I marked it on my GPS. I kept going for maybe 3/4 of a mile before it got so thick only a rabbit could get through it. On my way back I ran into a impassable briar patch I had to go around, good thing I marked those rocks because I was way off course. I know better than to go off trail without a GPS, it's easy to get turned around.

As long as you have where the car is parked marked on your phone's map somehow and you have the area topo maps downloaded to your phone it is ok I think.

I came across it while on rock creek trail, once I map some other unmapped trails I'll update gpsfiledepot.com, not sure USGS would care. I've got the topos on my garmin, I've got allmaps and trailforks on my phone but usually don't use it. I always mark my truck, but going in a straight line to it isn't possible. I tried this in pic related, my truck is right under that green tank, but it's a drop-off. Captcha mountains, lol.

As far as I know they aren't recognized, the official trails all have paint markings. There's another I'm going to do soon weather permitting, but I have no idea where it goes, so I'll need all day and once on it committed.

It doesn't show up at the coordinates you gave as a trail (35.0576, -84.4569) but there's a little frog mountain trail nearby that looks to be no longer maintained on historical topo maps.

how long was this spur trail? You said it was impassable though?

finding hidden passable loops to me is the holy grail, or at least trails that take you somewhere, top of a mountain, a waterfall etc.

I'm pulling my GPS data now. The spur was a mile to a mile and a half before it got so thick I gave up. It levels out on top of the mountain, I was close to bushwacking it over to the other trail, but pussied out.

It is, by far, the shortest, easiest loop you can find in tea creek backcountry/cranberry wilderness area, I think, and the north fork trail another anon said was comfy but I don't think it has been maintained much recently (old logging road).

Seems like a tough hike though. Central appies are nice because you can get atop a ridgeline by walking only a couple hundred feet of vertical gain.

Also, further south there's no real snowpack to deal with. Further north, it is much more technical in the winter.

dolly sods is primarily popular because it is a somewhat open plateau atop the allegheny front, which also means it is incredibly windy much of the time, which means in addition to the bitter cold, you have a fierce wind chill and you are on an open, exposed plateau making it worse, lovely in summer, not so much in winter

That guy is a total casual. He wants his trails as manicured as his hands are and shies away from any hike with a decent amount of elevation gain, fallen trees, etc. It's no surprise that he wouldn't want to visit the sods in winter.

because it's a shithole, the mountains are way closer. it's nice in fall but that's about it. i guess i wouldn't mind seeing it now that it's complete. i remember walking out on the bridge before they finished it, when it was fenced off and it was just called "high bridge trail."

if you're going to go, maybe take a bike out there and go out the other direction a bit.

I don't have a bike. I was going to first walk across the bridge and back, then go to appomattox courthouse area - then to holliday lake/holliday creek to walk along there for a little bit because I think it will be really crowded on the bridge on a weekend.
