Why are they even bothered? Some guy stacking up some stones is not really different from you un-stacking some stones. Since you are restoring the original natural state and the stacker created an unnatural state, you can even be commended for doing so, or the stacker condemned. But even if they do not share this interpretation, as said, one guy is putting stones together, the other is putting them apart, why are they bothered by one but not the other? Makes no damn sense to me.

There's definitely a "bad neighborhood effect" when it comes to cairns. If you leave even one standing, someone will see it and think, "Oh, it's okay to make a stack here, I'm going to do it too." If you're going to kick one, you have to kick them all.

The only person I've ever given a pass was this girl I used to ride bikes with. She'd make little arches out of rocks. Not gangs of them in one place, just one, always in a creek where it's going to get washed away eventually.

One day I was out by myself, riding a bum trail on some state land. The only other people I've ever seen out there were looking for morels. And I saw this girl way down in the creek, almost motionless, couldn't make out what she was doing. We had a chat about it, she was in the process of building one of these little arches. She was really good at skipping rocks, too.

Small reptiles and amphibians rely on scattered stones to rest on or underneath to regulate their body temperatures. Same with small mammals and bugs to a lesser degree. Removing unnecessary cairns helps protect the local ecosystem.

I'm a geologist who loves kicking those fuckers, and I have a few reasons:

First is that leaving a cairn is essentially spitting in the face of 'leave no trace' for the reason of simple egoism.

Second is that it reduces the spread and amount of cover/hiding for insects and other small critters. More open ground = more chances for predators to catch them = upsetting natural ecosystem.

Third, it increases a landscape's susceptibility to erosion by removing any rock armor.

Fourth, there are microecosystems that are evolved rely of these small rocks.

Fifth, they're gay as fuck.

Cairns are actually quite intricate devices. Using gravity and a number of stacked stones, you can easily detect if a retard has passed through the area; they cannot help but attack the stack, triggering the cairn and allowing you to easily recognize from a great distance if the area has been visited by one of the retarded.

in most United States national parks, rangers are encouraged to knock rock piles down. In waterways, for example, pulling up river rocks can cause damage to the micro life on the rock, even killing off fish eggs lodged to them. In drier settings, animals can clue in to what cairns mean and seek them and the byproducts (like food waste) that can come alongside them. Moving rocks off of the soil, you are allowing it to be washed away and soil cover for native plants can be decreased, increasing erosion. I wouldn't go aggressively kicking them if you're trying to explain yourself to friends, though. Maybe try to spot where they could have come from and place them back in those areas?
