If I break off 2 lures at year due to bycatch and 50% of the lures I break off kill a pike (I've been told by reputable sources that they won't, unless the fish is hooked badly in both sides of the mouth, which isn't likely to happen with the tiny little hook on a #0 Mepps or a UL crank, my whole life), that's still less impact on the pike fishery than the ones I eat by an order of magnitude.

I don't target pike without a wire leader, but I don't use a wire leader when fishing for fish that don't need one, on the off chance that I catch a pike while chasing LMB or Bluegills.

I do care about making sure that I don't harm the fish any more than I have to, given my hobby of recreationally harming fish, but using a wire leader when jigging for panfish doesn't pass the reasonableness test.

I've caught pike with gnarly healed wounds dude, they are adept at healing and wild strike or not, when you've got a half inch of hook, it's hard to get it in both sides of your jaw.

I had a pike (in the slot where it isn't legal to keep them, 25 inches long) hit a 7 inch long Lazy Ike so hard that the lure squirted through the soft flesh between his jawbone and skull, and then hooked him on the outside of the body. I had to cut the line to avoid needing to "fish" the lure (which has 2 bigass trebles that somehow failed to hook onto anything tough enough to prevent this) back through his mouth. That was in June. I caught him again 4 weeks later and he was still fat and had almost completely healed from the 3 inch long facial piercing I gave him. Normally I would have killed that fish and ate him instead of letting him go, but opening myself to being fined by the DNR also fails the reasonableness test, and he did fine.

Maybe your water temps are more marginal for the and the level of stress creates the differences in our experiences, but that pike was in an urban lake.

You've really got two choices, use tackle heavy enough for pike or use tackle that risks breaking off on a pike bite. IMO a single hook dropshot rig is probably unlikely to kill a pike that breaks it off, unless he gets wrapped in the line going to the weight. I'd use midweight fluoro for my mainline, and then instead of rigging as illustrated, tie a lighter line (mono?) to your midweight line at the hook so that the pike is likely to cut the weight line first.

While its not ideal for either species, I have used 20lb mono leaders for pike, and for perch bait dropshotting. I would offer that as a compromise for anyone serious about pike inadvertently taking your perch presentation. You will still catch perch, but the chance of a break off on anything under a 5lb pike is very minimal and I would say acceptable.

Some rivers about an hour of my town in new zealand.

they're mostly stocked, put in bodies of water for you to catch and eat. I keep most every one I catch, especially from bodies of water where I know it isn't possible for trout to survive the whole season, whether that be hot summers or bad winters.

Rainbow trout are native only to a small range in California. Everywhere else they're stocked. They're naturalized in a lot of places but basically it was put there to be fished. I wouldn't feel bad about keeping every single one.

Serious question. Is there any reason ice fishermen just throw their catch onto the ice and let them suffocate/freeze instead of bonking them? I've never understood whether it's actually good because of the cold or if it's just traditional

Most don't know any better that it's cruel but also in many conditions they die of exposure really fast and it's not that bad. Sure, it's shitty when it's 35°f and they flop until they asphyxiate, but when it's 10°f or colder, they freeze to death about as fast as bleeding.

Not saying a fish isnt obviously a higher organism than a night crawler but I assume you dont have any qualms with impaling a live organism on a hook to catch a fish, because you know it doesn't have the ability to even know its in pain. I assure you this most likely the case with all fish

Fish are thrown on the ice when ice fishing because it kills them. They go dormant quickly enough that its certainly less cruel than being bled out. Puting fish on ice is literally an established way of dispatching fish.

I personally don't do this. I cut the gills if they are a large fish or bonk them for smaller fish like perch. I have found fish live for far too long when thrown on ice for me to be comfortable with it unless it is ridiculously cold out. Not too rare to find perch or walleye still alive when you clean them hours after catching them if you don't kill them.

Some fish like trout die quickly on ice. I still cut the gills in that case because it makes cleaning them a lot cleaner though.

Out fishing the Thames estuary tonight around Grays, found a lovely little secluded concrete jetty next to some docks to fish from.

Fishing two no-name £70 14ft beachcasters with 3-hook clipdown rigs and 5oz sand-grabs.
Bait is strips of squid and frozen black lugworm on size 2 Aberdeen hooks, no lures here (the weak should fear the strong).

Line is 20lb braid with a tapered shockleader on Sonik SKS8000 reels.

How longs your rod? 2-4oz beachcaster is pretty small. I'd say maybe a 40-50lb tapered leader cut down to a suitable length, you want the small knot if you're using a multiplier as it really helps it go through the rings.

Honestly, I'd invest in a longer 4-6oz rod if you can, the extra leverage a 13-15ft rod gives is unbeatable.

By small knot, I mean using a tapered shockleader (15-50lbs) means you don't end up having to tie a knot with a big thick line.

11ft sounds like a nice rod to use from a pier though, definitely dont get rid of it.

Targeting bait fish with a sabiki rig to chunk up and bait my knocker rig that I use primarily to target mangrove snappers and grunts.

Both of these are on yoyos.
Would it be worth it to get an ugly stick to increase my cast distance and maybe diversify into artificial lures?
I am also retarded and sometimes clamp down on the handline when I get a bite unexpectedly occasionally resulting in snapped lines.

Is an actual reel with drag settings a good way to mitigate this or should I just git good.

WM has a 3 piece 6'6” rod and reel combo for 60 bucks and I have everything else I need except artificial lures.

Ultralight will be almost entirely trout, sunfish, and crappies.
Light will do sunfish, trout, and crappies fine, at the cost of how small of a lure you can cast. What it will do better, however, is finesse bass stuff. Medium can kinda be forced to do anything, but for panfish and trout you'll feel over armed, and for catfish you'll wish you had more.
Medium heavy will be almost exclusively for heavy cover bass, and catfish.
Ultralight and medium would be my choice, but light and medium heavy will also be a solid choice. If you're only going to get one I'd go medium and then you can choose to go ultralight or full heavy from there.

Are you fishing in abrasive conditions, and dragging your line on rocks and sand or the sides of the jetty or something? If so, tie a 2-6 foot mono or fluorocarbon leader on, and it'll solve your issues.

I typically get 3 or 4 years out of braid before it starts to weaken and I strip off the first 5-10 meters off the reel. I fish 100+ days a year during open water season, though I do have half a dozen rods and so aren't using the same rod every day, although they're generally all with every time I take the boat out.

Of course I'm fishing fresh and use rod sleeves to reduce the effects of UV radiation on my combos, salt water or high UV exposure will make your gear wear out faster, and this doesn't count shortening line if I find a nick or a knot when I inspect the line, and while I do inspect often, I seldom find issues.

The line becomes much more ... idunno wiggly? And tends to fray more when cutting, im not experiencing excessive lie twist or anything

The line is much "stiffer"... is it just the line "breaking in"? Could be mostly cosmetic my it almost starts to unravel after just 2-3 days of fishing

Definitely not being suffix again, and the color runs off on my eyes and reel

Sufix 832 and daiwa j braid x8 are the best braids that are readily available in the US imo. The color loss is nothing and I have never had issue with unraveling, you are using a leader right? And melt the tag ends of your knots.

A little piece of single strand wire in the 20 pound range will save your lures from pike but be thin enough not to deter panfish but I probably wouldn't bother either

im using a wire leader and its not at the cut it starts fraying, its on the main line where it starts to almost seem to unravel

That doesn't look completely awful, but I'd check my eyes for wear just in case if that was mine. I don't know why it's not colorfast, I have Suffix 832 Yellow in 30 lb on one of my heavier spinning rods and it's kept it's color decent for two seasons, I'll snap pics this evening.

Ya i have 50lb yellow sufix 832 on my saltwater popper/stickbait setup and haven't lost any color, but my 30lb sufix on one of my other outfits lost the "camo green" color, I think it might just be inconsistencies in the dye? I wouldn't worry about it unless it breaks away from your knots or something that isn't due to abrasion.

If it's not just a regular crank painted to look like a crayfish, it should dive hard and bounce off the bottom, but even if it can't get deep enough, crayfish do occasionally end up further up in the water column depending on what they swim to escape, so it's not a big deal.

I'm not actually a fan of crayfish cranks, I much prefer crayfish jigs.
