Moving out west for a month after Christmas, never lived near mountains in the winter before. What do I need for a winter hiking day trip?

Layers. wear little when you hike but have something warm to put on when stop moving. sweat is your enemy.

If the trail is well used and hard packed you need boots that you can attach cat tracks or similar too....if you are breaking trail you need snow shoes.

if the snow is thick enough to warrant snowshoes, often poles simply wont reach far enough to be useful
poles are good for stream crossings, you do not want to be falling in those when /out in the winter

was gonna ask about baskets. I cross country ski and they seem to work well there so makes sense that they work for snow shoes too.

I'm at my parents until I move out west so I'll try looking through their old stuff for anything that could come in handy. I have an old pack somewhere around here too i'm pretty sure

if you're cheap you can use your regular ski poles instead of buying a new pair of poles

the advantage of regular (summer) trekking poles with snow baskets is you can adjust it to be shorter for ascents and longer for descents, or collapse and strap to your pack if not needed

also the ski poles I have are mostly carbon fibre and expensive. I don't really wanna mess them up

I don't expect you to go out and buy crampons but if you find ice on the trail then a pair of microspikes might be a good investment, its like chains you put on car wheels but for footwear, pretty cheap and comfy, snowshoes or crampons are overkill since you dont live permanently there

I think my parents have snowshoes I can grab so I’ll look for those. If not I’ll definitely grab those chains, I’ve seen people use them before and they seem to work. Can’t decide if they look retarded or badass though

Well speaking of winter, what type of footwear should I look for for cold wet climates. I'm talking snow, ice, mud and mountains. Would use for trekking and hiking almost exclusively.
I was thinking leather boots like pic related. Any reference?

if you are winter hiking you should not wear leather boots. unless you dont mind them disintegrating. It is important to get a pair of boots with at least 400g thinsulate if you plan on hiking in canada. Going to solo winter hike/camp through siberia next november. Any one with experience here?

and... what part about them didn't hold up?

Was it the traction on snow? traction on mud? insulation from cold? ventilation? water resistance? snow getting into the boots?

Those were the main problems and that's how I came to the conclusion of leather boots....
traction was alright. I guess any footwear would struggle on a layer of ice or mud. Also I haven't tried snow rackets which would probably be necessary for longer walks

also if you're going winter hiking and your feet get cold, you should consider insulated boots (200 or 400g thinsulate)
