If it's something he needs, he'll already have it; if it's something he doesn't need, you'll just be guilting him into carrying extra stuff, and excessive weight causes injury in many cases. Even if he's been complaining about a particular piece of gear that's starting to fail, you're not going to know the exact purposes he needs it for, and it'll either have too much weight or not the right features.
Possible exceptions might be titanium tent stakes or high-quality hammock straps, depending on his flavor of camping, a food dehydrator for making his own trail food, or a wool sleeping beanie in the same color as his pack. Those tend to be the types of things that /out/ists will want, but may not be able to justify the cost over a few ounces saved here and there.
