There’s nothing especially arduous in this part of the world, I just wouldn’t recommend hiking here in January.

Peaks of the Balkans? If you haven't seen it, check it out, looks like a great hike. I can't comment on the level of tree cover there though so don't know how suitable hammocking.

Be on the lookout for any Gypsies and Jews, they have been found to take advantage of backpackers in this region.

Most locals wont let you know because they want your business and dont want you to move out of their area.

Serbian here, there are indeed based places. Depending on where will you camp, there are overall low chances of dying or getting attacked by something. There are many venomous snakes in the summer tho.
